Learning Objective: To investigate and evaluate the conservation strategies put in place to help save the biosphere.

How do we decide which habitats and species to conserve? 1. Do we save ‘hotspots’: the best bits which are the most under threat, or do we save representative samples of all the world’s biomes? Biodiversity hotspots

2. Is it best to get value for money by focusing on conserving areas in developing countries? Money goes further in these countries because of lower costs.

3. Is it worth completely restoring completely devastated areas, because here the costs would be higher?

4. What about species? Should we save high-profile animals like pandas and tigers? Or should be conserve the species which are the most important to the food web? Remember, it is much easier to raise money to save whales and elephants than obscure insects.

How do we conserve the biosphere? Conservation strategies can be on one of 3 scales: 1. Global 2. National 3. Local We are going to look at a variety of different management projects. They are Ramsar, Cites and National Parks A. Ramsar – page 53-54 (purple textbook) B. Cites – page 53 (purple textbook) and info sheet C. National Parks – page 53 (green textbook) and extra info can be found on page 232 of ‘Key Geography’ book

So, what do you think ‘sustainable management’ means, when we are talking about the biosphere? Sustainable Management – the maintenance of any area of the biosphere to meet current and future ecological, economic, and social needs.

Read pg.53 of purple textbooks and make notes on the example of sustainable biosphere management at a local level (Caledonian Forest in Scotland). Then answer the following exam question: Choose a local example of biosphere management and explain the methods used to make it more sustainable [4 marks]
