Think Art! Marjorrie C. Custodio Heritage Middle School 7 th Grade Fine Arts

Teaching art history can be a challenge because students might find it boring.

We need to be excited about teaching art history and engage the students.

Make art history entertaining and get the students to think critically.

Art history can be entertaining and engaging at the same time.

Present students entertaining facts about the artist’s life.

Claude Monet 1)Monet was well known at an early age for his drawings of caricatures.

Paul Cezanne 12. Zola wrote a book based on a painter who became a failure.

Vincent van Gogh 12) Vincent van Gogh painted Starry Night when he was in an insane asylum.

Salvador Dali 4) Dali once arrived in a heavy deep sea diving suit to give a lecture and nearly suffocated.

Present students images that will grab their attention.

Diego Rivera

Detail of the Sistine Chapel

Self-portraits

Increase student interest by using Pop culture references.

Santino

Simpsons

Andy Warhol

Students can develop critical thinking skills and art appreciation.

Teach students to make inferences about the artist’s life.

Modeling Inferences Artist InformationInference 1)In 1482, Leonardo worked for the Duke of Milan where he flourished as an artist, architect, engineer, and scientist. 2) Leonardo was way ahead of his time designing machinery, war vehicles, and submarines. 3) He also produced anatomical studies dissecting cadavers in his workshop. I think Leonardo da Vinci had amazing talent because he excelled in many different areas besides art. Support: Leonardo was an architect and a scientist.

Guided Inferences 7)Within 17 years, Leonardo completed only 6 works, one being the Last Supper (1495- 1498). 8)In the Last Supper, Jesus is the FOCAL POINT: red shirt, centered, and visual movement (Disciples). 9)Leonardo is the first to experiment with 1 point perspective. I think ______________________________ ________________________________________ because ____________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________. Support: __________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________.

Independent Inferences 11)Leonardo painted La Gioconda on wood and carried it around with him. 12)Her lips are too small, her body is turned to suggest movement, and she has no eyebrows. 13) The painting is behind bullet proof glass in the Louvre in Paris because someone tried to stab it. 14) Is La Gioconda Leonardo as a woman? I think ______________________________ ________________________________________ because ____________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________. Support: __________________________ ________________________________________ ________________________________________.

Teach students to make connections to the artist’s life.

Modeling Connections 1)He had a slightly bizarre personality. He dyed his hair straw blond and later replaced his real hair by blond and silver-grey wigs. 2) Warhol was obsessed by the ambition to become famous and wealthy. 3) He knew he could achieve the American dream only by hard work. 4) Andy created two cable TV shows- Andy Warhol’s TV and Andy Warhol’s Fifteen Minutes for MTV. I read about Andy Warhol being obsessed with fame and using television to help him become famous. This reminds me of my husband’s friend from college, Matt Hoffman, who tried to become famous by appearing on Big Brother. It helps me understand Andy Warhol realized the power of television and its ability to make even “ordinary” people famous. Matt realized this too which is why he auditioned for countless reality shows before appearing on Big Brother.

Guided Connections 1)He had a slightly bizarre personality. I read about _______________________ __________________________________ This reminds me of _________________ __________________________________ It helps me understand ______________ __________________________________

Independent Connection Artist InformationConnection 1)Before becoming an artist van Gogh tried dealing art, teaching, working in a bookstore and being a preacher like his dad. 2) His younger brother Theo was very supportive and often sent money to help buy art supplies and food. 3) Van Gogh moved to Paris to join Theo. Theo was in the business in buying and selling paintings. I read about _______________________ __________________________________ This reminds me of _________________ __________________________________ It helps me understand ______________ __________________________________

Teach students to apply their inferencing and connecting skills to the artist’s work.

Picasso’s Blue Period I think ______________________________ ________________________________________ because ____________________________ ________________________________________ _______________________________________. Support: __________________________ ________________________________________ _______________________________________.
