1 TWS: Text Set Maps

2 1.) The Seven Continents (Rookie-Read About Continents) by: Wil Mara
This is a book that teachers can read to their students when they are first introduced to the seven continents of the world. It covers all of the continents, and includes pictures from each. This book would enhance my students’ understanding of the continents of the world, which is one aspect of my unit. Reading Level/Stage: Unknown Retrieved from:

3 2.) There’s a Map on My Lap: All About Maps by: Tish Rabe
This book is great to help teachers explain maps and their uses to students. Also, the book talks about globes, which is just another form of a map. This is a book that some of my 2nd graders could read independently (not all), then we could come together as a class to discuss what everyone learned from reading the book. My unit was about locating different geographical features on maps, but before students can locate different land and water features, they must first learn what a map is. Reading Level/Stage: 3.2 ATOS (

4 3.) Me on the Map by: Joan Sweeney
This is a wonderful book for students to learn about maps and how they can show large areas of earth (continents and oceans), as well as small areas (streets and homes). This book is one that my 2nd graders can easily read independently. It is important for students to make connections with what they are learning about, and this book helps them to do that. Students need to realize that there are people all over the earth, and that everyone is represented on a map in some way. Reading Level/Stage: 1.8 ATOS (

5 4.) Our Wonderful Oceans: Sharks, Whales, Dolphins, Turtles and Other Marine Life
by: Kid Reads From this book, students will learn some interesting facts about the five oceans of the world, but will also learn about some of the fascinating creatures that live in the oceans. The students I work with in the 2nd grade are fascinated with animals and enjoy learning about them no matter what subject they are studying. Even though this book is not specifically about the location of oceans, it would help students to understand ocean life better and they will get a better sense of the climate around each ocean. Reading Level/Stage: Unknown

6 5.) National Geographic Kids Beginner’s World Atlas by: National Geographic
This Atlas is a phenomenal resource for students to read and look through on their own. There are plenty of maps and diagrams for students to look at, and there is a great deal of information presented about the world’s geography. This particular Atlas is made especially for children, which makes it easier for them to read independently. This book has so many colorful, exciting pictures that it is sure to draw students’ attention. Reading Level/Stage: Unknown

7 6.) The Mystery of the Great Lakes by: Carole Marsh
This book is based on the Great Lakes. While the story may be fiction, the setting is non-fiction. By reading this book, students will have the opportunity to read an exciting, adventurous story while still learning about the Great Lakes for my unit. Also, by reading this interesting story, students will be learning without some ever realizing it. It is important for students to learn the material for my unit, and by having students read something they would enjoy will only assist me in my unit. Due to the fact that it is a difficult read for my 2nd graders, this is a book that I would have to read to the class. A chapter a day would be a good idea. Reading Level/Stage: 3.9 ATOS (

8 7.) National Geographic Kids United States Atlas by: National Geographic
This books is just about the United States. A large part of the SOLs for my unit deal with geographical features of the United States, and this book would be a valuable resource to the class. Mountains, lakes, rivers, and more are shown and explained in this Atlas. With this book being solely about our own backyard, students will be able to make personal connections easier than with a book about a foreign land. Reading Level/Stage: Unknown
