8 TH GRADE MATHEMATICS CURRICULUM NIGHT

GRAPEVINE-COLLEYVILLE ISD Mathematics Mission Our mission as the GCISD mathematics community is to provide all students a common foundation by offering opportunities to learn important mathematical concepts and procedures with understanding. Mathematics Vision Our students will develop confidence to express themselves mathematically for life in a changing world.

GCISD Mathematics Community believes all students can: learn to value mathematics become confident in their ability to do mathematics become mathematical problem solvers learn to communicate mathematically learn to reason mathematically

Texas Response to Curriculum Focal Points Focal Point 1 Using algebraic notation and the rational number system to represent and solve problems in a variety of contexts. Related 8 th Grade TEK The student is expected to compare and order rational numbers In various forms. (8.1A) What it will look like on assignments Order the following from greatest to least: -3, 0, -4.5, 2 2,

Texas Response to Curriculum Focal Points Focal Point 2 Using geometric characteristics and properties to solve problems. Related 8 th Grade TEK The student is expected to use the Pythagorean Theorem to solve real-life problems. (8.9C) What it will look like on assignments If each of the bases on a baseball diamond are 90 feet apart, what is the distance from second base to home plate?

Texas Response to Curriculum Focal Points Focal Point 3 Using statistics and probability to analyze and summarize data sets. Related 8 th Grade TEK The student is expected to draw conclusions and make predictions by analyzing trends in scatterplots. (8.12B) What it will look like on assignments What trend is shown in the scatterplot Hours of TV vs. Hours of Sleep?

Texas Response to Curriculum Focal Points Focal Point 4 Representing, applying, and analyzing proportionality. Related 8 th Grade TEK The student is expected to generate similar figures using dilations including enlargements and reductions. (8.6 A) What it will look like on assignments Graph an image of the figure using a scale factor of 3.

Pre-TAKS Interventions In the 8 th Grade, students have three opportunities to pass their math and reading TAKS tests. Year-Long Interventions Math Plus Class and Optional Tutorials On-Campus Math Specialist (Ms. Phelps) Math Benchmark Test (February 1 st ) Identified Students Attend Tutorials

TAKS Schedule 1 st Administration – Monday April 4 th Tutorials during the school day 2 nd Administration – Tuesday May 17 th Summer school 3 rd Administration – Tuesday June 28 th Grade Placement Conferences In 2010, 94% of GMS 8 th graders passed on the 1 st or 2 nd administration.

TAKS Passing vs Commended To pass the test a student must give 29 or 30 questions correct 58% or 60% To received commended a student must give 45 questions correct 90%
