Advanced Metering Infrastructure – The fundamental layer for Smart Grids Electronic Meters are virtual monitors of the electrical system, apart from recording energy consumption for billing. Meter Reading methods Manual visual reading Manual reading through Handheld units Remote Meter Reading Automated Meter Reading Smart Meters can detect pre-configured alert conditions and notify these to a remote master. Smart Meters can control supply of power based on pre-configured logic or due to a command from a Remote Master. Smart meters can provide meaningful energy consumption data to a consumer in their home on an In-Home-Display device. Advanced Metering Infrastructure is a system by which utility can remotely acquire meter data automatically and on demand, be notified of events, and can control supply of power to individual consumption points. 12/10/14

LT consumer meters on PLC Typical AMI Architecture HES LT consumer meters on Radio Communication over GPRS Head-end System acquires meter reading data at predefined regular intervals. On demand meter reading. Critical Events occurring at meter end notified to Head-end system immediately on occurrence. Meter can be configured remotely Remote meter connect /disconnect can be done from HES through DCU for Load Control with configurable pre- programmed reconnect attempts and lockout intervals.

Smart Grid functionalities enabled by AMI 12/10/14 Load Management Outage Management, Power Quality Management Improve Customer Service Demand Response Utility Asset monitoring Consumer Self Energy Monitoring Energy Audit Dynamic Tariff schemes Revenue Assurance

AMI needs... Auto-registration of Meter-Modem in the system. Security and Privacy. Addressability and Reachability of tail-end devices. Device lifecycle management. Detection and Prevention of unauthorised usage. Transparent mechanism for remote monitoring and management of link health and data traffic. QoS monitoring mechanism and infrastructure. 12/10/14

AMI deployments around the world 12/10/14

AMI is characterised by Large Volume of unattended, geographically spread remote machines that have to communicate continuously in near Realtime with Head -End machine Communication Infrastructure is the backbone of such systems 12/10/14
