8 18 TH CENTURY ROMANTIC MUSIC Romanticism was first used to describe new ideas in painting and literature; the word was later taken up by musicians to describe the changes in musical style. Romantic composers aimed for powerful expression of emotion, often revealing their innermost thoughts and feelings. Romantic music can be about love, hate, or death. Romantic composers were often influenced by romantic literature and art

9 THE RISE OF ROMANTIC MUSIC  Because of the French Revolution and the Napoleonic Wars, aristocrats could no longer afford musical luxuries.  Romantic composers wrote primarily for a middle-class audience  The rise of the middle class led to the formation of many orchestras, opera groups, and subscription concerts.  The piano became a fixture in every middle-class home.

12 TCHAIKOVSKY SYMPHONY NO. 4 Tchaikovsky dedicated this symphony to his patroness, Nadezhda von Meck. She would find in it "an echo of his most intimate thoughts and emotions."
