2 Female Changes (Secondary Sex Characteristics)
Pituitary glands “tell” ovaries to secrete estrogen (female hormone). Causes the following changes: Fat deposits in breasts Elaborate duct system in breasts Pelvis broadens Skin softer and smoother Fat deposits in hips, buttocks, thighs Pubic hair

3 Female cont. Hair under arms develops Vaginal secretions begin
Ovulation occurs (egg released monthly) Menstruation begins Estrogen causes bones to stop growing in length Acne

Male Changes (Secondary Sex Characteristics) Pituitary glands “tell” testicles to secrete testosterone (male hormone). Causes the following changes: Longer heavier bones Larger muscles Thicker tougher skin Deeper voice More body hair Pubic hair

5 Males cont. Increased metabolism Sperm production begins
Genitals develop Some experience baldness later in life Sudden uncontrolled erection of penis Nocturnal emission (wet dreams) Acne Emotional concerns over body changes or lack of changes
