1 Purpose and Characteristics of Dramatic Literature Literary Response and Analysis Standard 3.1

2 Drama is literature that has features similar to novels and short stories such as: characters, plot, a major conflict, a climax, a resolution, and a theme. * Review with a partner what each of the above listed are and then write them in your notes. (I.E. Characters=

3 I.Drama or Dramatic Literature SPECIAL FEATURES: A cast of characters, listing the roles in the play Dialogue or lines that the characters speak Stage directions telling the actors where to stand or how to move Parenthetical directions telling the actors how to speak their lines Information about lighting, props, or scenery

4 Protagonist= The main character in a drama

5 Antagonist= The people who get in the way of the protagonist or prevent this character from achieving their goal

6 II. Comedy Has a happy ending. Doesn’t necessarily have to be very funny. The antagonist overcomes and achieves their goal.

7 III. Tragedy Unhappily ends The protagonist may come to a bad end because of a tragic flaw, a flaw within their character that brings their downfall.

8 IV. Dramatic Monologue An extended speech by one character that reveals a great deal about him or her. A soliloquy is an extended speech within a longer play.
