The Metro By Amr Salama Madame Myres 4/8/2013

The Metro The Metro first opened on July 19, 1900 Common names for the Metro is Paris Metro and Metropolitain(Metro de Paris) The Metro has 245 station About 4 million passengers ride the Metro and has grow up to 1 billion Tickets cost up to 1.7 euros Opens on 5:30 am and closes at 1:15 and on Saturdays closes on 2:15

History It was not highly used because of the Worrld Wars so it didn’t become popular until after WWII France had other railroads but not ones connected with each other It took four years to decide whether or no to build the Metro and then another 20 years to build it underground or over ground Those who agreed with the idea were called the Pairsians and those who disagreed with the idea and thought it would be better to extend the existing railroads was the French national Gov’t

Casualties/Accidents August 1903: the Couronnes Disaster a fire that killed 84 people August 2000: wheels went loose and it barely injured 24 people August 2005: fire broke out but it was soonly extuigished and injured 19 people July 2007: another fire happened only injuring 15 people

Subways/Lines RER: It was a two railroads that went East-West lines and another going to North-South lines. It was used because of a huge population boom and everybody kept using cars and there would always be busy rush hours. Line A and Line B: Line A went from Ligne de Saint-Germain in the west to Ligme de Vincennes in the east. Line B merged with Line A but was go from Paris-Charles de Gaulle Airport. They did not make a Line C at the time because they didn’t have the money Line C and Line D: when the did have the money they added two more line. Line C would serve going form Gare d’Austrelitz and Line D would serve for the Chatelet.

Cont. Subways/Lines Two new subways were added called the Eole and the Meteor. Meteor: first subway to have screening doors to prevent suicides and accidents. The Meteor goes through Saint Lazare and Olympaides Eole: Eole is an abbreviation for Est-Ouest Liaison Express. It is the 5 th line for the RER. More commonly known as the Line E. Line E goes through Saint Lazar, La defense, Haussmann, and the Grande-Arche, etc. Other lines include Line 4 and Line 12 Line 4: it is 3.2 kilometers south from Porte d’Orleans to Bagneux Line 12: it is an extension with Marie d’Aubervillers

Upcoming Plans In 2017 there going to build a Line 11. Line 11 is an extension with the RER. France is also going to make a Grand Paris Express. It will consist of 100 kilometers of circular line throughout Paris. Line 5 will add a new station Line 7 will be a southern extension Line 9 will have a two stop extension

Fulgence Bienvenue Project This project made a huge success on the Metro Fulgence Bienvenue was the creator of this project. It project consisted of 10 lines. He wanted to do a shield method but it was soon rejected since a cut-and-over method was much quicker. It was a process of building the tracks undergroung instead of going through harsh Parisains rock and soil.

Interior/Exterior of the Metro Interior: the Metro was not that well decorated at first. The subways had white to give reflection since they didn’t have good electricity. The wall were decorated with posters of different types of advertisements and colored tiles. Eventually they changed everything after the Second World War. They started getting better stuff like metallic wall in 1948 and had to replace those with new ones in 1967. the white tiles were removes and placed with totally different sheds of orange. Exterior: the exterior part of the subway is decorated on a Motte style. The Metro is decorated in a Art Nouveu, glass canopies. Now the redecorated the exterior of the Metro with stone, metal, and stainless steel balustrades
