VCE Health & Human development- Unit 1. Sac (part A) – determinants of health multimedia presentation. Behavioural Determinant of Health- Developing and Maintaining friendships. Regeena

What is the issue? Why is it considered to be a determinant of health? The issue is ‘How devolving and maintaining friendships can affect your health.’ Developing and maintaining friendships is considered to be a determinant of health, because the peer group influences you and what your choices are. Young people rely on there friendships and more heavily as they go through there teenage years. It develops a valuable resource for all individuals involved. Having mutual and respectful friends means the individual is valued or what they are, which allows you to express your feelings without being judged, to discuss concerns about the present and future, to experience fun times with each other, and to just be your complete self.

Positive aspects of friendships. It gives you and alternative from family, where you can seek advice and support each other through crisis. They help boost your self esteem. They make experiences fulfilling. They keep you happy and thinking positive about yourself, which limits the chances of depression/anxiety.

Negative aspects of friendships. They can make you do regretful things. They can make you drift away from your family. They can get jealous. They can use you.

Physical Health. Friends influence each others behaviours and what they participate in, such as exercise, substance use, and risk taking activities. They can all affect physical health and development, because they are things you don’t do alone. You always seem to have a friend/s right next to your side. Its good to have someone there to experience it with you, but you have to have the right people, otherwise bad situations appear to happen. Exercise is something every individual needs to do. But most people these days don’t do it because there groups don’t, this is when you need your own independence to do what you want to do, not what friends do, and if they are your true friends they’ll accept that and let you do it.

Mental Health. Mental health leads a big role in friendships. Encouragement and supporting each other is something friendships is all about, not being jealous of there achievements. You need to be there for your friends when they are upset, and you need to listen and give advice when needed. These little things promote mental health, and make the friend realise that your worth keeping, and not just there for the social side of it. Your there to be a friend through everything and never let them down. You keep them happy and thinking positive about themselves, which limits the chances of depression/anxiety.

Social Health. Social health is a massive part in friendships. Having a big option for social activities mean you have a change to met a lot of new different people. It also can assist in building communication skills, and social robes. People not having friends, can lead to suicide with a majority of teen girls these days. To stop this, make shore you include your friends in a number of social activities, movies, beach, shopping, footy, etc. You also meet new friends entering social clubs, which mean you have are learning new skills and developing new friendships at the same time.

How to be a good friend. Be real, don’t act as someone your not. Be honest, no matter what. Watch out for each other. Support there decisions. Give each other advice. Listen. Don’t make a promise you cant keep. Treat them as you would like to be treated. Don’t judge them. Let them live there life the way they want to. Be happy for them. Let them no how important they are to you.

To me friendship is one of the most important things in your life. As you grow older, you realise who matters, and who doesn’t. As I’ve grown older, I’ve gained and lost friendships. Distance can be a big problem in maintaining friendships, as you don’t see each other much, which mean you have a chance to be replaced, or forgotten. My friends are the reason I wake up everyday. They make me who I am today. They are the most beautifullest girls and boys ill ever meet. Some friendships I’ve had since kindergarten and I no ill have them friendships forever, others I’ve met in high school but I no they remain with me forever as well. Life your life the way you want to live it, don’t let someone live it for you.
