ANIMAL RIGHTS LO: To explore issues in this unit

Stewardship Factory farming Fur and ivory trades Vegetarian Halal Dominion Genetic modification Cloning Keeping a lot of animals in a small living area/ e.g. chickens to produce cheap food Someone who doesn’t eat meat Making an exact genetic copy Illegal sale of animal fur and tusks Looking after or being a caretaker of the planet/ animals Changing the genetic makeup of an animal/ vegetable/ person Sacrificing an animal as part of a religious custom (the way Muslims kill animals) Ruling over/ having power over animals/planet (being in charge)

Animals – The same or different Intelligent Live in communities Have families Create art/music Religious beliefs Protect their young Get married Need food/ water for survival Can choose to be good or bad Humans and Animals do this Only humans do this Only animals do this

True of false? All Muslims are vegetarian Most Christians believe in Stewardship Both Muslims and Christians should treat animals with respect Muslims should not eat meat that is not halal Christians NEVER agree with animal testing Christians would agree with battery hens Muslims are against hunting because it is cruel and animals should not be used for sport Some Christians and Muslims say its ok to test on animals for cures to diseases if the animal isn’t in too much pain

Not all religious believers are vegetarians/santas helpers because it does not specifically say in the Bible or Quran not to eat meat/fairies. Religious believers say it is a personal choice/dance whether or not to eat meat. Many Christians and Muslims eat meat but say the animal should be treated in a kind/mean way when it is alive. Most would agree/disagree with battery hens as this is animal cruelty and they believe they are Gods stewards/fashion police so they are responsible for caring for the planet and its animals/elves. Muslims will only eat Halal/Kosher meat. This is meat that has been killed in the correct manner. The animal should have its throat slit and the blood should be drained out of the animal. a prayer is said after this sacrifice. It is seen as a kinder and cleaner way of killing the animals. Some religious believers/dancers are vegetarian but this is a personal choice not a rule in Christianity or Islam

Should people eat meat? 90% of the UK eat meat. Meat is a source of protein vitamins and minerals. Some people do not eat meat because: -Don’t like h………… animals -R………. Beliefs -They do not like the t………. of it Some Christians and Muslims don’t eat meat out of choice but neither religion teaches them not to. Muslims must eat meat which is h……………….( sacrificed properly) Both Christians and Muslims believe we should treat animals k…………… whilst they are alive

“No religious person should be vegetarian” Bullet point your main ideas for this question

Christian quotes… What do they mean? “ Let man rule over the f……… and birds” “ And you will be c………..of the planet” “ God made man in his own i………..”

Islam and the treatment of animals Muslims say we should be good stewards/enemies to animals. We can hunt them for food/hotdogs but not for sport/ climbing. If you kill an animal for no reason Allah will judge/swear at you

Do animals have rights? Teach that Animals do not have the same rights as humans Protects against cruelty and neglect (criminal offence) God created the world for Humans to look after and respect- This includes respecting animals Protests and marches held to fight for animal rights by groups such as WWF/ RSPCA Some creatures by law cannot be pets Foxhunting/dog hunting=illegal Most religious believers support animal rights groups- Peaceful protests not damaging property or violence Monitor the treatment of animals and raise awareness Strict laws about animals moving from one place to another Animal experiments for make up is now banned by law The law Animal rights groupsReligious attitudes

Wild animals Religious believers say that if the animals are treated in a good way it can be helpful to keep them in these places if it is like their natural home Most have educational purposes Do not always provide a good living environment Some animals kept in small cages and are stressed and unhappy If animals are kept in a good condition, it can help preserve the species that may be endangered. A polar bear in a New York zoo was too hot in summer temperatures Zoos/Safari/Aquariums Support Against Religious views

Animals as pets/transport/work Pets- Dogs/Cats Transport/Work Donkeys/Dogs/Horses/Camels Explain the above uses and say what a Christian or Muslim might say about using animals in this way

Hunting- Circle correct words Christians and Muslims are generally for/against hunting. Some Christians might say it is ok because God told them to have dominion/stewardship over the animals… Muslims would say it is ok/ not ok to hunt animals for food but strictly forbid/support hunting of animals for sporting purposes.

Bullfighting Popular in Spain Bull is angered and then stabbed with a sword Traditional Some say it is cruel Christians- Some say its fine we have dominion/Some say no its cruel and we should be Stewards Muslims- Against all bullfighting- no reason- cruel

What is Factory farming? “Animals kept in small confined spaces to produce cheap food” Are Christians and Muslims FOR or AGAINST battery hens?

Fur and Ivory trades Animals are h…………. for their fur E……………. are killed for their ivory t……… which are used for furniture and other items The Ivory trade is i………… in the UK but is a massive business around the world

Fur and Ivory trades Why would Christians and Muslims say we should not hunt animals for their fur or Ivory tusks? Use religious teachings to help you answer

Animal testing- For or against? It can help find cures for cancer/ illnesses Animals are too different from us- There is no point testing on them as the results may be different It is cruel and puts the animal in pain

Religion & Animal testing- FOR/AGAINST? Its playing God God has given us the intelligence to come up with it- Must be ok Testing for the greater good- Finding cures = loving Shouldn’t harm animals as they are Gods creatures

Animal Testing For Against

Religious views on testing For Against

GM/Cloning GM- Genetic modification- Editing or changing a plant/animals make up E.G. To make better meat/ To study how genes work/To produce bigger crops CLONING Making an exact copy of another Making Dolly the Sheep- Took DNA created an exact copy in a lab- Put it back in the original to grow it as a copy- Lots of embryos destroyed to create one sheep. Is this fair? Dolly died of arthritis- Was the copied sheep weaker?

FOR/AGAINST CLONING It kills lots of embryos whilst making one clone Treating animals as disposable if you can make copies It can be used to find cures/ research DNA/CELLS Does it have a soul if it is a copy Scientific developments can lead to a better world

Religion and cloning Christians say some cloning is not/is acceptable to find cures for diseases/moustaches. However some would say it is wrong because it is playing God/LadyGaga Most Muslims/Hindus would say that Animals can be used to find cures as long as suffering is not too great/too small Both Christians and Muslims would say cloning of Humans/Santas is acceptable/not acceptable

“ Animal testing is wrong” Arguments for Animal testing….. Arguments against Animal testing……. My opinions…… Some Christians and Muslims would agree….. Some Christians and Muslims would disagree……..

Exam style questions 1: What is factory farming (1) 2: Religious believers should be vegetarian, what do you think?! (3)

Plenary- Mark it! 6marks Either mark your own answer or swap with the person next to you 1 mark-Something relevant 2 marks- Simple opinion 3 marks- Opinion well explained but no religious comment given 4 marks- Two sides considered, religious view mentioned 5 marks- Good evaluation of both sides, religious views explained 6 marks- Excellent evaluation, clear religious knowledge, key vocabulary used and good standard of written English.
