2 - 2 - U.S. Consulting On-screen Presentation Template_white_042707 Overview The Desktop Card Utility makes is easy to renew your HHS ID Badge (also referred to as a “smart card” or a “PIV” card) certificates. This application is downloaded to your desktop and can be run when your certificates are due to be renewed (if your certificates have expired, you will not be able to use the application). The process to renew certificates should take approximately 10 minutes. You will use your HHS ID Badge and PIN to do this. If you don’t know your PIN please visit a Lifecycle Work Station (LWS) before proceeding. If you encounter any problems or errors while renewing your certificates, please contact the NIH Service Desk. 3 - 3 - U.S. Consulting On-screen Presentation Template_white_042707 Take Note Once you have started, do not remove your HHS ID Badge from the card reader until the process is complete. Removing your Badge before it’s ready may interfere with the functionality the badge.

4 - 4 - U.S. Consulting On-screen Presentation Template_white_042707 Launch the Desktop Card Utility Insert your HHS ID Badge into your computer’s card reader. Double-click the Desktop Card Utility logo to launch it (a shortcut is placed on your desktop). Click Continue.

5 - 5 - U.S. Consulting On-screen Presentation Template_white_042707 Verify your identity When prompted, enter your PIN and click Continue. Note: If you don’t know your PIN please visit a Lifecycle Work Station (LWS) operator before proceeding. If you enter an incorrect PIN, your HHS ID Badge will become locked after 15 attempts. If you are locked out, you need to contact the NIH Service Desk to unlock your badge.

6 - 6 - U.S. Consulting On-screen Presentation Template_white_042707 Agreement The system checks for a pending certificate renewal. If there is a pending certificate renewal, you will be prompted to read and agree to the terms of the HHS ID Badge agreement. When ready, click Agree to proceed. If there is no certificate renewal pending for your badge, there is nothing you need to do. Click Quit to exit the program. Don’t forget to take your badge from the card reader.

7 - 7 - U.S. Consulting On-screen Presentation Template_white_042707 Finish Once you agree, the system will update your HHS ID Badge with a new certificate. The process will take approximately 10 minutes. Once the HHS ID Badge is ready with a new certificate, remove your badge from the card reader and click Exit.

8 - 8 - U.S. Consulting On-screen Presentation Template_white_042707 Final Step Once you have completed the certificate renewal process, publish your new certificates to the Global Address List (GAL). Instructions are located at: http://smartcard.nih.gov/PKI_files/Outlook2010_CertGuide.pdf If have previously sent or received encrypted email, you will also need to recover the now-expired certificate in order to read past encrypted email.
