2. What is asthma?
Asthma is a chronic lung disease that inflames and narrows the airways.
Origin: the term asthma comes from the Greek verb “aazein” meaning to pant.
Scientists are not sure of cause but, most of the time it is hereditary.

3. When did asthma start?
Asthma was known to be around when the Egyptians were alive.
Asthma is also known hundreds of years ago, China people gave other people asthma herbs containing ephedrine to help them breathe.

4. Signs and Symptoms Examples: -recurring period of wheezing
-chest tightness
-shortness of breath
-coughing.
As soon as you feel an attack coming, you must treat it immediately.
Factors: -Parents who have had asthma
-children with respiratory infections.

5. Triggers Perfumes and hair sprays Woodsmoke Chemical fumes
Cleaning agents (such as phenyl)
Cigarette smoke
Strong odor while cooking, particularly frying
Atmospheric pollution
Plant pollen
Household dust
Molds
Cockroaches
Animal fur or skin

6. Diagnosis Many tests can be given to diagnose your asthma.
Lung function test -use test called spirometry to check how your lungs are working. It measures how much air you breathe in and out.
Bronchoprovocation-test to see how sensitive your airways are to different things.

7. Treatment Two types of treatment:
-Long term control: help reduce airway inflammation and prevent symptoms.
-Quick relief: “rescue” relieve symptoms that may flare up.
Pill form (short term) and Inhaler (long term)

8. Roles of:
Diet- Dieting will not help you with your asthma, unless you avoid the foods that trigger your attacks.
Exercise- Exercise can sometimes trigger the attack.
Medicine- decreases symptoms and prevents inflammation

9. Statistics
Asthma affects more than 20 million adults in the United States.
Asthma is the most common cause of hospitalization for children under the age of 15.
It is estimated that 80% of asthma deaths could be prevented with proper asthma education.
