5 Online Training: Background Goals Design

6 Background Under the leadership of Nora Baladerian, there have been nine national and international conferences on the abuse of children and adults with disabilities… the last of these was held in Riverside California in March 2003….

7 Background By late summer 2003, we realized that widespread budget deficits might make our 10th Conference a difficult project -- one where too many people might be prevented from attending because of reductions in training funds and restrictions on travel -- even from one county to another….

8 Background So, we started immediately to pursue the strategy of developing and presenting the first Online Professional Training Conference on Abuse and Disabilities. Initial funding was awarded in October 2003 by the U.S. Department of Justice, Office of Victims of Crime.

9 Goals In-depth training Accessibility Scope of Learning Affordability

10 Goal: In-depth training In face-to-face conferences, faculty often provide 1.5 to 3 hours of training. In the Online conference, every faculty member will provide a total of 10 hours of direct contact with participants, not just through lecturettes but also through special Internet services that allow for extensive interaction.

11 Goal: Accessibility In face-to-face conferences, people with a disability that prevents travel are lost to us. This includes both faculty and participants. In the Online conference, we have the opportunity to tap more faculty and more participants. Our Online conference will be more accessible.

12 Goal: Scope of Learning In face-to-face conferences, participants normally can attend 3 keynotes and 7 breakouts -- 10 events in total. In the Online conference, we are arranging it so that every participant can attend every event -- a total of 20 training sessions!

13 Goal: Affordability Face-to-face conferences normally involve $200 tuitions, and an average of $800 in travel and hotel costs. The Online conference is being designed to cost less than $100, including continuing education credits. This should make it possible for much wider participation.

15 Design: The Conference Plan 20 Online Webinars - 1-hour live meetings Online Document Center Course materials E-lists (listservs) Forums (discussions groups) Online chat Secure and private access

16 Design: 20 Online Webinars 20 faculty members: all top experts 1-hour sessions: arranged 2 per day Right from your desktop: office or home Or join a group in a Sponsor Site Live Q & A sessions All Webinars are recorded and stored online for later viewing and “on demand” training opportunities

17 Design: Online Documents Key documents related to each webinar will be placed online by the faculty for use by all participants –Papers and articles (.rtf and/or.pdf formats) –Slide shows (PowerPoint or Presentation) –Other materials authored by the faculty

18 Design: Course Materials Faculty also provide course materials online in advance of the sessions. These include but are not limited to: –Webinar syllabus –Annotated reading list –Annotated bibliography –Recommended Website list

19 Design: Conference E-lists Following the Webinars, all participants will automatically be subscribed to a topical e-list (electronic mailing list.) Faculty will be subscribed to the list on their topic as well. The e-list will be the place where participants find support on practice issues, and continue to learn skills.

20 Design: Online Forums Online Forums (discussions groups) are available via the Conference Website. All participants and faculty have access to all forums, and can follow the discussions that are posted there. Everyone in the conference can post new discussions and add responses to the discussion threads they find online.

21 Design: Online Chat Faculty will be available for two online chat sessions in the weeks following their Webinar. Participants can also sign up for the chat service so they can arrange chats with other participants any time after the Webinars are completed.

22 Design: Private Access All faculty and participants have their own User ID and Password to access the Conference Web Center. All conference materials and resources reside in this secure and private area. Those who cannot attend the live Online Training can still register to gain access to the Conference Web Center.

23 Continuing Ed: A Benefit Continuing education credits are expected to apply to all 20 Webinars. High contact hours yield high credits. CME, CEU, APA, AAMFT, MCLE credits are being arranged Participants will pay extra for continuing education credit. All details and forms will be handled on the Website.
