3 Tobacco 101: Module 2 3 Toxic Chemical Soup Smoking causes an estimated 443,000 deaths each year. That’s nearly one-out-of-five deaths! Can using tobacco cause harm? Yes, tobacco use is the number one preventable cause of death in the United States.

4 Tobacco 101: Module 2 4 Toxic Chemical Soup In North Carolina, tobacco-related illnesses cause the death of more than 13,000 people each year—35 people every day. Can using tobacco cause harm? Yes, tobacco use is the number one preventable cause of death in North Carolina.

5 Tobacco 101: Module 2 5 Toxic Chemical Soup Tobacco smoke is made up of a toxic mix of chemicals. What is in tobacco that is so bad? Tobacco contains over 7,000 chemicals.

6 Tobacco 101: Module 2 6 Toxic Chemical Soup Chemicals in tobacco smoke damage your cells. When you keep smoking, the damage cannot heal. This stress can lead to disease. So, what is so bad about that?Tobacco use harms your body.
