Advantages of Social Networking? Connections made via Social Networking can help with : seeking a new job making or receiving advice on career or personal issues locating assistance receiving support from like-minded individuals getting and giving product and service referrals finding romance

Disadvantages of Social Networking? privacy: you lose some privacy compared to not being on a social network – who sees what you have posted? you may later regret posting pictures or comments – postings can be removed but not deleted forever online bullying: someone posts unkind or untrue comments about you trust: some people may use a fake profile as an alias – are they who they say they are? – care should be taken when choosing to be friends time wasting: can be a real distraction and time waster – some people spend many hours on social networking rather than working (or studying)! e.g., constantly checking their twitter feeds

Disadvantages of Social Networking? breakups in relationships due to meeting ‘old flames’ or committing adultery bullying from individuals, groups or internet trolls who target their victims privacy is lost because other users can find out facts about you pictures that are posted are shared very quickly and users may regret posting an image paedophiles use fake profiles and target children lots of time is wasted by people trying to keep up to date with all of their friends on social networks employers will find out what potential employees have been up to – could result in not getting a job based on something posted online in the past once information is shared, it is on the Internet and cannot be easily ‘unshared’

Scenarios? Advantages & disadvantages of social networking for: Young child (brother/sister) Teenage (son/daughter) Large supermarket Miss Jones (new landscaping business) Teacher Celebrity TV company/film company

What is Social Networking? exchange of personal information, gossip and news via Social Networking websites social networking websites are virtual communities that encourage and foster interaction among members of a group by allowing them to post personal information, communicate with other users and connect their personal profiles to others' profiles. membership in a web community is achieved by registering as a user of that website and creating a personal profile. Frequently visiting and interacting with others who use that website makes one's network stronger. While many social networking websites are open to anyone, some are open only to people in a certain age group, or who belong to a specific real world community or occupation. members of social networking websites communicate by posting weblogs (blogs), messages, video and music streams or files, and chatting. Often members of social networking sites join smaller communities within their network. For example, users of Facebook belong to groups associated with specific schools they have attended or common areas of interest, while LinkedIn members belong to groups associated with their places of employment. Members of Last.fm share music preferences with other users. Social networking websites allow members to promote themselves and their interests by posting personal profiles that contain enough information for others to determine if they are interested in associating with that person. Critics of social networking claim that it contributes to predatory or stalking behavior and can be used to invade privacy. Since many people are free with the information they post about themselves, these websites are frequently used to investigate a person's character and social habits. Popular sites like Facebook and MySpace have been used by potential employers and law enforcement agencies to gather information about individuals.

Examples of Social Networking sites: 1. Social Connections Keeping in touch with friends and family members is one of the greatest benefits of social networking. Facebook: Arguably the most popular social media utility, Facebook provides a way for users to build connections and share information with people and organizations they choose to interact with online. Facebook Twitter: Share your thoughts and keep up with others via this real- time information network. Twitter Google +: This relatively new entrant to the social connection marketplace is designed to allow users to build circles of contacts that they are able to interact with and that is integrated with other Google products Google + MySpace: Though it initially began as a general social media site, MySpace has evolved to focus on social entertainment, providing a venue for social connections related to movies, music games and more. MySpace

Examples of Social Networking sites: 2. Multimedia Sharing Social networking makes it easy to share photographs, video and audio content online. YouTube: Social media platform that allows users to share and view video content YouTube Flickr: This site provides a powerful option for managing digital photographs online, as well as for sharing them with others. Flickr Picasa: Similar to Flickr, Picasa provides a way to organize and share photos. It is a Google product and so offers integrated tagging and sharing with Google+. Picasa

Uses of Social Networking post comments and messages on your page and you can do the same to their page. as soon as you make a change to your page, that can be sent as 'news' to your friends' page. some of the sites also provide blogs, forums, automatic links to your favourite music artists, online games and other 'Apps'. this constant exchange of personal information, gossip and news is what social networking is all about. Twitter is a little different in that you can only post very short 140 character comments, but it is an amazingly effective way of keeping up with gossip and news from people with similar interests.
