2 Collaborators University of California College Prep Online Prepare students for higher education through the development and delivery of online courses, counseling resources, and academic support services. Corporacion Universitaria para el Desarrollo de Internet (CUDI) Non profit corporation of Mexican academic institutions that runs the high speed research and education network

3 Education Challenges in California Approximately 46% of 9th grade students who start high school do not graduate from the high school they first enrolled –High Mobility Rate –Drop out rates 40% of high school freshmen in AY 2005-06 will repeat Algebra 1 25% of K-12 students in the state are English Language Learners (80% speak Spanish) Source: California Department of Education

4 Mexico’s Education Challenges 74% of Mexico’s workforce between the ages of 15-64 years did not complete a high school diploma (43.2 Million) Approximately 700,000 spaces available (public and private) nationally for new students to attend 10-12th (preparatoria)– 2.1 Million students in the age group placement Students who enter a university education need remedial courses in Mathematics

6 UCCP Online Content Course development –Teams include UC Faculty, CA credentialed teachers, and industry –High budgets, Enduring Content –Highest Quality Online Courses in the Country –Designed for Internet 2 Course Structure –Each lesson Video Text & Audio Synchronized Interactive elements through Lesson HW, Quizzes, Midterms, Finals

7 Translating Online Mathematics courses to Spanish Mathematics Translations to benefit California English Language Learners –Access to Mathematics courses online in Spanish –Teachers will use to complement their classroom instruction –Students will have access to the course online as an additional resource

8 Translating Online Mathematics Courses to Spanish Assist Mexican students to prime their skills in Mathematics prior to entering a University education –Use content as full online courses for students to complete University requirements –Provide access to the online resources to students planning to attend a higher education Make Mathematics Learning objects available to University faculty to use and integrate into their teaching

9 Planning of a Bi-national Online High School- California Will assist California schools to address the high mobility rate of migrant students Improve the High School Completion rates for students who are English Language Learners (ELL) Give ELL students the opportunity to take a curriculum in Spanish while they build their English academic language –Students will transition to a full English curriculum once English language Competency is achieved

10 Learning Objects Repository Collaboration with CUDI’s application group and Monterey Institute for Technology in Education (MITE) and UCCP –Establish learning objects standards –Make resources available to everyone in the academic community –Encourage the academic community to contribute to the repository of learning objects

11 Why Internet 2? High quality material needs broadband because of intensive use of video, animations, and simulations etc. Ease hosting issues. Material can be hosted in servers on either side of the border using high speed connections Broadband environment permits better tutoring environment Use sophisticated Learning Management Systems to manage enrollment, progress, records
