Nation In Fall 2006, 3.48 Million students in American higher education (i.e., 20% of students) took at least one online class. 66% of institutions offer online courses; 35% offer online programs. Growth Rate: From 2005 to 2006 Sloan Consortium: “Online Nation” (2007)

State Amount Distance Ed (predominantly online courses) grew from 1995-96 to 2005-06: 808% Average growth per year: 23%. Percentage of total student headcount that was Distance Ed: 12%.
