3. Translations German class; “If English was good enough for Jesus Christ, it is good enough for me.” What is the problem with that statement? Jesus would not have spoken English! Jesus would have probably been raised speaking Aramaic in everyday life in Northern Palestine, but also spoke Hebrew (Luke 4:16-30) and perhaps also understood Latin and Greek which were used in matters of state and interactions with the Romans.

4. Translation “There will be, there can be, no absolutely reliable translation…unless it be effected through the gift of translation, as one of the endowments of the Holy Ghost. The translator must have the spirit of the prophet if he would render in another tongue the prophet’s words; and human wisdom alone leads not to that possession” (Talmage, The Articles of Faith, p. 237).

5. “…As Far as It Is Translated Correctly” Joseph Smith explained that he believed the Bible as it “came from the pen of the original writers,” but that “ignorant translators, careless transcribers, or designing and corrupt priests have committed many errors.” (Teachings of the Prophet Joseph Smith, sel. Joseph Fielding Smith, Salt Lake City: Deseret Book, 1938, p. 327.) He also stated that “many important points touching the salvation of men, had been taken from the Bible, or lost before it was compiled.” (Teachings of the Prophet, p. 10.) Textual corruption occurred then in two ways: 1.Intentional corruption that occurred early before widespread distribution (1 Ne. 13:26-29) 2.Poor translation from ignorance, carelessness and lack of the Holy Ghost in the translation process (see previous slide)

Which version of the Bible should I use? “… none of these translations surpasses the King James version of the English Bible in beauty of language and spiritual connotation, and probably in faithful adherence to the text available to translators. It is this version which is used by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in all of its official work both at home and abroad. The literature of the Church refers invariably to the King James’ translation. Other translations are used by the Church only to help explain obscure passages in the authorized version” (John A. Widstoe, Evidences and Reconciliations, p. 120).
