ANNOUNCEMENT & COPY SECTION 2

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A WEBSITE OR IT’S INACCESSIBLE  Create a Tumblr account or Blogger account  A popular and growing social media platform, especially for younger audience  Simple to use interface requiring no HTML/web coding knowledge  Free  Branded URL with myurl.tumblr.com  http://pennstatedubois.tumblr.com/ http://pennstatedubois.tumblr.com/  Goal: You need to have some form of a web or digital asset to promote your event or message

WHY THE WEB IS IT..

ANNOUNCEMENT AND COPY CREATION  Gather this information before every event and during planning:  Part 1: 5 W’s  Who, what, where, when and why  Part 2: Write a quote from you about the event, what selling point or message did you want to convey in your own words  Part 3: Other details of the event:  Benefits, history, other details  Part 4: Call to action  Web address, less use of phone numbers

PRESS RELEASE  Take all of that information and format into a press release  Part 1  Part 2  Part 3  Part 4  Think of creative headline  LEAD: Date (City, State):  CTA

MEDIA ADVISORY  Same information from your press release, just organized differently  This is your “invitation to the media” to come to the event; difference from Press Release  Follow the 5 W’s outline with Part 1, and still include Part 3 and 4

EXTERNAL GROUP PLUGS  Chambers, Agencies, Downtown groups, Partners listervs  Use Part 1 of your press release and include a hyperlink to click through to website/web address with full press release The Penn State Nittany Lion Basketball program will sponsor a dodgeball tournament to raise money for Penn State Dance Marathon (THON) that supports the Four Diamonds Fund. 19 DIGITAL  Already set up your tumblr or blogspot account to have a web-based asset to drive interested people to your message and content  Already have a website? Make a tumblr account anyway…

FACEBOOK  Must have a Facebook page  Need to take the time to create a Business Page, not profile or personal account, for your organization or group  Use the same copy from your Group Plug, and other content like videos, photos and external content  But don’t use long posts – that’s why you want to have a web presence to drive them to click the link to the full story / information  Comments from stakeholders giving you real feedback  Facebook advertising you should consider using if on low, low budget

INSTRAGRAM  http://instagram.com/pennstatedubois http://instagram.com/pennstatedubois  Instagram is one of the hottest, and stable, new social medias, especially under 18  Under 18 left Facebook for unfiltered and anti- parental pastures of Twitter and Instagram  Goal: post all your photos here, and you can link your instagram account to your Facebook account. Now it looks like you’re using 2 social medias, but only working 1 time.

SMARTPHONE  Convince your board to buy you a new I phone  Phone  Email  Facebook and social media apps  How you need to use Instagram  Digital Camera  Video Camera All for $199 with a 2 year contract??? $80/mo…how much did you spend in newspaper advertising last year? Digital cameras alone are $99…so what are we hesitating on again?

PROMOTION MATERIALS SECTION 4

EASY FLIERS AND ADS TIPS  Use a MS Office flier template & stick with it for all of your events – it’ll become recognized as your non-profits event right away….easy branding.  If you design something, don’t always go vertical.
