4 China One Child Policy (Population Management) Summary of the case study In 1950s China’s population grew significantly. The government got concerned so they introduced the one child policy, if the rule was broken people got a heavy fine. PLC facts 1210 people lived in china in 1997 There are 117 men to each 100 women in china. The fine was 4-10 times the average salary.

5 Italy- Ageing Population Summary of the case study In italy, the population is getting smaller and also older. PLC facts The fertillity rate 1.33 1 in 5 of the population are over 65 Highest life expectancy gains. (75 and 81.2 years respectively for men and woman).

6 Allerton Bywater (Counterurbanisation) Summary of the case study Allerton Bywater is a semi-rural village and civil parish in the south-east of city of Leeds metropolitan borough in West Yorkshire, England. Living here was calm and relaxing, but more people came from Leeds so land was changing since more houses had to be built so didn’t look so calm and relaxed. PLC facts located near the motorways of M1, A1 (M) and M62. Its 2 miles from north of Castleford. Leeds is the UK’s 6 th most congested city

7 Kibera (Urbanisation) Summary of the case study Kibera is the largest slum in Nairobi, and the largest urban slum in Africa. The Kibera slums have many problems including orphans, overcrowding, uncomfortable, rickety, unclean, living amongst sewage and also there is a large amount of crime. PLC facts 60% of all the people Kibera earn less than $1 a day. The average size of shack in this area is 12ft x 12ft. Only about 20% of Kibera has electricity.

8 Junction 32 (Changing Retail Provision) Summary of the case study Junction 32 is an outdoor shopping centre which people from all locations visit. It is more popular due to the complex called Xscape which is a very popular location for all ages as it offers indoor attractions. PLC facts Over 5 million people live within 60 minutes drive time making a strategic site for northern developers.

9 BedZED (Sustainable Living/Development) Summary of the case study Beddington Zero Energy Development is an environmentally friendly housing development in Hackbridge, London, England. PLC facts There is 100 live work units It cost 15 million to build Total energy use in the homes is 60% less than for average homes in the local area
