1 Comenius 2013-2014 The taste of Holland Comenius is an international project with the meaning of: ‘ New activities and innovative methods in the field of geography and science education as a support for the school teaching process’. There are four partners: Italy, Turkey, Poland and Holland. This project is based on science and geological research, supported by a special program : ‘Virtual Globe’. The exchange week in Holland was from the 30 th of September until the 6 th of October Monday. The first impression Today was the day of arrival, for the Turkey, Italian and Polish students! Of course the Dutch people welcomed them with a special ‘Tulpendans = Tulip dance’ at the airport in Amsterdam (Schiphol). Everyone took their Polish, Turkey or Italian partner home and showed them their living area. In the evening some of the participants went to the centre of Zevenaar to a café or a restaurant to talk about their lifes and make new friends. Tuesday A nice bike ride Today all the students went to the school in Zevenaar named ‘Liemers College’. When the students from Poland, Italy and Turkey came to school, they were pretty impressed by the number of bikes! Most of the students went on their bike to school, so the students know how the traffic and this bike system in Holland works. At school we watched some presentations from all the countries, to know how every country is. After the visit and tour through the school we went for a bike tour to ‘Doornenburg’. Some of the students had some troubles with the bikes, but bikes are a symbol for Holland, so that’s a typical Dutch thing. We went to a castle in Doornenburg. Wednesday. watery lands Today we went to Zeeland, one of the twelve provinces in Holland. Yrseke is a famous place for the mussels and oysters, we learned a lot about the mussels and oysters over there. We went also to the Deltaworks, this a very famous system to keep Holland safe for seawater. Because Holland is at some places lower than the water level. After de Deltaworks we had a little stop in ‘Zierikzee’, and we had dinner in ‘Scheveningen’. Thursday, Rotterdam We kicked of the day by visiting ‘Kinderdijk’ to see its mills. After that we visited Rotterdam, the acclaimed ‘port of Europe’. We then took a water cab to cross the ‘Maas’ to get to the ‘Euromast’ before taking a walk through the city to reach the old harbor, visiting the so- called ‘kubuswoningen’ on our way. That evening we had dinner in an Italian restaurant at the beach in ‘Scheveningen’.

2 Friday. Amsterdam On Friday we went to Amsterdam. When we arrived we went to see the ‘museumplein’ and the ‘Rijksmuseum’ before going to the ‘Dam’. Everyone then got some free time to have lunch and explore the city. Later we went on a cruise through Amsterdam’s canals. That evening we could choose where we wanted to have dinner by ourselves, as the students and teachers dined separately. Saturday. On Saturday the students had the entire day to themselves to organize fun activities for them and their students. In the evening everyone, including the Dutch students’ parents, had a big barbecue.
