ORGANISATION OF TRANSPORT IN THE UK

Homework…What did you find out? Why is it important? What are the wider economic effects?

Quick Task In groups of 3 or 4, brainstorm either: 1. As many types of transport modes and infrastructure in the Private sector 2. As many types of transport modes and infrastructure in the Public sector You have 5 minutes, go!

Transport in the UK Public Sector Transport in the public sector = economic problem (what does that mean?)

Public Sector Transport – Historic Many services owned and run by the Government Big sell-offs to the Private Sector over decades Last big privatisations 1980s Thatcher Government 1987-1991: BA 1992-1996: British Rail 1997-2008: PFI (London Underground) 2009 onwards: selling off of roads…

Public Sector - Today Provision of infrastructure  Whether a new stretch of motorway should be built?  Whether a historic town would benefit from a bypass?  Whether it is a good idea to subsidise local rail and bus services provided by the private sector

What’s the story?... Heathrow third runway: poll reveals public split Richard Branson denounces DfT for accepting FirstGroup rail bid High speed rail routes bring benefits too, insists head of HS2

Transport in the UK Private Sector The past 15-20 years huge deregulation and privatisation. Buses, Trains and Planes For example, the British Airports Authority owns 6 airports in the UK through Privatisation The M6 Toll road that opened in 2004 is the first road infrastructure in the UK that has been funded by Private sources. Q – Why do you believe the government want to include the Private Sector in traditionally public sector provisions?

Summarise… Come up with a summary of what has happened in each category in the ‘Investment in Transport’ table you have been given. When you have done this, can you suggest why the changes may have occurred?
