1 President/Vice President run as a team! Voting Rights Amendments 12 th Amendment The Twelfth Amendment (Amendment XII) to the United States Constitution details electing the President and Vice President. It replaced Article II, Section 1, Clause 3, which provided the original procedure by which the Electoral College functioned. Problems arose in the elections of 1796 and 1800. The Twelfth Amendment was proposed by the Congress on December 9, 1803, and was ratified on June 15, 1804.

2 Voting Rights Amendments 15 th Amendment One of the “Civil War Amendments” (Amendments 13,14,15) The Fifteenth Amendment (XV Amendment) passed by Congress February 26, 1869, and ratified February 3, 1870. The 15 th Amendment granted African American men the right to vote. African American Men get the Right to Vote!!

3 Voting Rights Amendments 17 th Amendment The Seventeenth Amendment (Amendment XVII) to the United States Constitution established direct election of United States Senators by popular vote.

4 Women’s Right to Vote!! Voting Rights Amendments 19 th Amendment The Nineteenth Amendment (Amendment XIX) to the United States Constitution prohibits any United States citizen to be denied the right to vote based on sex. It was ratified on August 18, 1920.

5 Inauguration Day: January 20 th Voting Rights Amendments 20 th Amendment The Twentieth Amendment (Amendment XX) to the United States Constitution establishes the beginning and ending of the terms of the elected federal offices. It also deals with scenarios in which there is no President- elect. The Twentieth Amendment was ratified on January 23, 1933.

6 Washington, DC gets 3 Electoral Votes Voting Rights Amendments 23 th Amendment The Twenty-Third Amendment (Amendment XXIII) to the United States Constitution permits citizens in the District of Columbia to vote for Electors for President and Vice President. The amendment was proposed by Congress on June 17, 1960, and ratified by the states on March 29, 1961.

7 Voting Rights Amendments 26 th Amendment The Twenty-Sixth Amendment (Amendment XXVI) to the United States Constitution limited the minimum voting age to no more than 18. It was adopted in response to student activism against the Vietnam War. It was adopted on July 1, 1971.
