1 A Visit to Trader Joe’s Grocery Store Meeting Basic Human Needs Created by: Karese L. Raibon

2 Content Objective Social Studies: K.6A & K.6C Today, we will identify basic human needs of food, clothing, and shelter. In addition, we will explain how basic human needs can be met, such as through self-producing, purchasing, and trading. First, we will define “basic human needs” Next, we will discuss how to met one of the basic human needs - food Then, we will take a virtual field trip to Trader Joe’s Grocery Store Lastly, we will discuss how Trader Joe’s helps met one of our basic human need - food

3 Language Objective: ELPS 2E & K.16B The class will participate in a virtual field trip to Trader Joe’s Grocery Store by using visual, contextual and linguistic support to understand more complex spoken language with support. In addition, as a class we will discuss what we saw during the virtual field trip speaking in complete sentences to communicate. Content Vocabulary – basic human needs, shelter, virtual field trip, virtual tour, purchase, grocery store, isles, check-out options, dwell, market Use complete sentences to describe what you saw

4 What are basic human needs? Basic human needs are important things you need in order to live. Basic human needs include: Food Shelter (Housing – A place where you stay or dwell) Clothing Basic human needs keep us healthy and safe. Today, we will focus on one of the basis human needs listed above – Food.

5 Where do we find food? Food can be found:  Outside in a personal garden – self producing  Visiting a grocery store – purchasing  Exchanging at a market – trading Let’s explore how we purchase food in a grocery store! Today, we are taking a virtual field trip to Trader Joe’s Grocery Store.  Before we start the adventure, draw a picture of two food items you might find at Trader Joe’s Grocery Store. Label your pictures. (Complete the Before the Trip Assessment)  During the tour, try to find the food items you drew as well as food items you would purchase at Trader Joe’s that meets basic human needs.

7 What types of food did you see at Trader Joe’s?  Use the below sentence frames and identify the food you saw during our Trader Joe’s grocery tour: I saw _______. ________ is a food item. Food is a basic human need.

8 How does Trader Joe’s Grocery Store help met our basic human needs? Trader Joe’s is a grocery store. We can purchase food at Trader Joe’s. Food is a basic human need. Food keeps us healthy. We need food in order to live. Please complete the After the Trip Assessment about basic human needs.

9 We are back at school! Hope you enjoyed the trip.  We can now identify basic human needs – shelter, clothing and food.  We can explain how to met one of our basic human needs – food.  We can explain how to purchase food from a grocery store. See you later!
