1
MS is a long lasting neurological disease that affects the bodies balance, vision, muscle control and other body functions
2
Lisa Santoro is a 48 year old female who has been having a hard time walking. She mostly has problems tripping up stairs. She has gone to a neurologist who diagnosed her with lyme disease, since the many of the symptoms are alike, then later found out she had MS.
3
Fatigue Blurred or double vision Thinking problems Clumsiness or a lack of coordination Loss of balance Numbness Tingling Weakness in an arm or leg One thing to remember is no two people have the same symptoms.
4
MS affects the Central Nervous System. This system includes the complex network of nerve cells responsible for sending, receiving, and interpreting information from all parts of the body. MS also targets the myelin of neurons. This causes messages to take longer.
5
The main way to diagnose MS is have and MRI to look for lesions along the spine and in the brain.
6
MS does not have a cure it only has medicine to help it from getting worse. Corticosteriods are giving to reduce inflammation during a flare up. Many vaccines and infusions of interferons are available to help people with their MS symptoms and seem to help slow down the progression of the disease.
7
MS is not curable. The disease does not kill but affects daily activities, including mobility. People will MS need help developing new ways to walk and do daily tasks.
8
The neuron communication is disrupted because that the myelin sheath is being destroyed causing messages to be slower and causing errors. The brain has lesions on the PML area this causes many problems with muscle coordination.
9
Occupational Therapist- An occupational therapist helped Lisa adapt to her new way of walking and helped her adapt to daily tasks. Teaching her ways to do things and concern her energy. Neurologist- Lisa visits a neurologist every 6 months to check her mobility balance and speech as well as review new MRIs for new lesions.
