1. CIAO Columbia International Affairs Online Click the down or up arrows on your BROWSER to move forwards or backwards.

2. CIAO is the most comprehensive source for theory and research in international affairs. It publishes a wide range of scholarship from 1991 onward that includes working papers from university research institutes, occasional papers series from NGOs, foundation-funded research projects, proceedings from conferences, books, journals and policy briefs.

3. CIAO - Searching  CIAO does not include reports on every international affairs topic, only those about which its participating organizations have written.

4. CIAO - Searching Citation  If you have a citation and want to get the full text, click on the appropriate type of material (working papers, policy briefs, etc.) in the left margin.

5. CIAO - Searching Citation  Click the name of the appropriate organization. The organization' s available publications will be listed on the next screen.

6. CIAO - Searching Citation  The organization's available publications will be listed here.

7. CIAO - Searching Author Search  If you want to search for the works of a particular author, click Site Index on the left margin and choose either to search by type of publication, or to search the whole database by clicking on All of CIAO.

8. CIAO - Searching Topic  If you want to search for a topic in any type of publication, click Search on the left margin

9. CIAO - Searching Search Form  Fill as little or as much of the search box as you wish, using Boolean operators: and, or, and not. Or, choose a subject from pull-down window.

10. CIAO - Searching  In Advanced Search mode, change operators via the pull-down windows as necessary. Example: world bank or imf finds reports that contain either term. Another example: aceh or ambon and moslem or islamic finds reports that contain either "Aceh" or "Ambon," as well as either the word "Moslem" or "Islamic."

11. CIAO – Viewing results  Viewing Search Results Search results are listed in order of relevance, which is determined by the frequency and placement of the search term.

12. CIAO  Downloading and Printing Display the record you wish to print or download.

13. CIAO – Saving Results  Downloading to Floppy Disk Insert a disk in the A: drive, click File on the browser bar and go to Save as. In the file name space, name the file using this format: a:filename.txt for use in wordprocessing software a:filename.html for use in web browser software. Click Save to complete downloading.
