3 ANIMAL TESTING Animal Issues: TOPIC 1
Ask the experimenters why they experiment on animals, and the answer is:  "Because the animals are like us."  Ask the experimenters why it is morally okay to experiment on animals, and the answer is:  "Because the animals are not like us."  Animal experimentation rests on a logical contradiction.  ~Charles R. Magel

4 Animal Testing/Experimentation
Dog Animal Experimentation Picture There is nothing wrong with this dog which has been taken from a dog pound, but it is the victim of major experimental surgery in an animal research testing laboratory. To help human beings and stop cruelty to animals, support humane medical research not involving animal tests. © Brian Gunn /IAAPEA Vivisection (from Latin vivus, meaning "alive", and sectio, meaning "cutting") is defined as surgery conducted for experimental purposes on a living organism, typically animals with a central nervous system, to view living internal structure. The term is sometimes more broadly defined as any experimentation on live animals (see animal testing.)[1][2][3] The term is often used by organizations opposed to animal experimentation[4] but is rarely used by practicing scientists.[2][5] Human vivisection has been perpetrated as a form of torture.

9 Some Alternatives to Animal Testing
An embryonic stem cell test, using mouse-derived cells to assess potential toxicity to developing embryos, has been validated as a partial replacement for birth-defect testing in rats and rabbits.(9) The 3T3 Neutral Red Uptake Phototoxicity Test uses cells grown in culture to assess the potential for sunlight-induced (“photo”) irritation to the skin. Human skin model tests are now in use, including the validated EpiDerm™ test, which has been accepted almost universally as a total replacement for skin corrosion studies in rabbits.(10) The use of human skin leftover from surgical procedures or donated cadavers can be used to measure the rate at which a chemical is able to penetrate the skin. Microdosing can provide information on the safety of an experimental drug and how it is metabolized in the body by administering an extremely small one-time dose that is well below the threshold necessary for any potential pharmacologic effect to take place. 11 Animal Testing/Experimentation - VIDEOS
PeTA – Basic Information “Unnecessary Fuss” – Univ. of Pennsylvania (Parts 1 & 2) This 1984 video was created from several hours of footage taken by vivisectors at the University of Pennsylvania. This vivisection lab was set up and funded by U.S. taxpayer dollars to intentionally inflict severe head injury, and ultimately death, to primates. This type of vicious "research" continues in labs all over the world, torturing many different species of animals, for no other reason than to land lucrative grants and subsidies in the tens of thousands or millions of dollars. Vivisection (experimentation on animals) serves absolutely no purpose. Vivisectors are deep in denial and steeped in the antiquated propaganda of such barbaric and ineffective methods. The vacuous victimization of these helpless animals is sickening, and those who engage in it contribute nothing but shame and perversion. Drug Testing on Beagles – PeTA Undercover Footage For six months, a PETA undercover investigator worked in an Ohio lab where beagles were force-fed Oxycontin, a drug that had already been tested on animals and had been on the market in the U.S. for decades. The tests were conducted ostensibly to satisfy Japanese regulatory requirements. This case led to PETA's involvement in the International Conference on Harmonization, which works to streamline regulatory requirements for drug testing. 16 TRESemme’s Policy on Animal Testing
What is your policy on animal testing? Animal testing is a contentious issue, and there are strong and diverse opinions on the need for animal testing to underpin the development of new consumer products, particularly cosmetics. Unilever is required to provide animal data to comply with the safety regulations in place in different countries across the world. Where we are legally obliged to commission animal studies, we ensure that the minimum numbers of animals are used. Unilever is committed to the elimination of animal testing for its business, and is at the forefront of research into non-animal approaches for assessing consumer safety. Currently, a very small amount of animal testing is still necessary to deliver innovative products that provide consumer benefits and are market competitive. At Unilever, using non-animal approaches is the norm. Most of our products reach consumers without testing any of their ingredients on animals. We do not test our actual products on animals (any testing is undertaken on individual ingredients), and we do not undertake animal testing in our own laboratories (any studies are conducted by third party laboratories). A few countries still undertake product testing in their government laboratories. We are working with the local authorities to ensure the implementation of non-animal methods. 48 ANIMALS THAT HELP HUMANS
Animal Issues: TOPIC 4 ANIMALS THAT HELP HUMANS *Service Animals/Animal Therapy* “Until one has loved an animal, a part of one's soul remains unawakened.” Anatole France

49 Background Information
The Difference between: Service, Therapy, Companion and "Social/therapy" Animals Service Animals are legally defined (Americans With Disabilities Act, 1990) and are trained to meet the disability-related needs of their handlers who have disabilities. Federal laws protect the rights of individuals with disabilities to be accompanied by their service animals in public places. Service animals are not considered 'pets'. Therapy Animals are not legally defined by federal law, but some states have laws defining therapy animals. They provide people with contact to animals, but are not limited to working with people who have disabilities. They are usually the personal pets of their handlers, and work with their handlers to provide services to others. Federal laws have no provisions for people to be accompanied by therapy animals in places of public accommodation that have "no pets" policies. Therapy animals usually are not service animals. A Companion Animal is not legally defined, but is accepted as another term for pet. 'Social/therapy' Animals have no legal definition. They often are animals that did not complete service animal or service dog training due to health, disposition, trainability, or other factors, and are made available as pets for people who have disabilities. These animals might or might not meet the definition of service animals. SOURCE:
