7 Location of Edible plants Edible plants can be found in your backyard, in the wilderness, and in many other common places.

11 Dandelion Look familiar? The dandelion is found in many fields and also in your backyard. You can eat the yellow part by itself! You can put the leaves in a salad. You can even eat the stem

12 CAUTION! These are considered weeds, so they be sprayed with weed killer fluids. You have to make sure you are not eating sprayed dandelions.

13 Black Walnut They grow on a branch on a tree In the fall when the leaves are changing colors, they are ripe which means you can eat them! When the shell is black, you can crack them open to eat!

14 Remember! They grow in trees so they may be out of reach The black shells may be hard to open, so have your parents help you crack them open!

17 Sugar Cane A Sweet Treat This plant is a type of grass that grows really tall! It grows in fields in tropical areas, like the jungle. The stem has sugar and nutrients in the inside.

18 How to get to the Sweet parts! You have to use your teeth to peel the outside layer. You could also use something to squeeze out the juice.

19 Coconut There is a nut on the inside that can make cooking oil The white stuff is coconut meat, you can eat it raw or cook it! There is a fleshy part that you can make coconut milk with!

20 What else can you do with a coconut? You can also make a bowl with the shell, so you can eat your food in it. Fun Fact!  Coconuts are the seeds of the actual palm tree.

23 There are four parts you can eat! You can eat the flower, the leaf, the stalks, and the sap! You can eat the leaves in winter or spring

24 The Agave Sap The sap from agave plants are called agave syrup It is something added to cereals like cheerios! This man is eating the sap!

25 Cactus Yes you can eat this prickly plant. The cactus grows a fruit called a prickly pear. You have to cut off all the needles so you don’t prick yourself Cactus leaves taste like green peppers

26 CAUTION! The fruit also has little needles If you do not get them all off, you could get them caught on your fingers! Baloo from the Jungle Book loves prickly pears!
