The Life Cycle of a Plant Third Grade Plant Science

Sadie the Seed Hi I am Sadie the seed and I will guide you along in the lesson, The Life Cycle of a Plant. Whenever you see me on your screen just click on me and I will help you out! Are you ready to get started? Just press the arrow!

What we are studying and why? Today we are going to be studying the life cycle of a plant. Plants are a vital part of our every day lives. They provide nutrients, herbs, food and much more. It is important we realize plants are constantly changing and that we are able to identify those changes. Teachers

MENU Quiz 2. Seed Growth 3. Plant Parts 4. Plant Growth 5. Review 1. Seed Dispersal

Seed Dispersal There are many kinds of seeds and each grow a different kind of plant, but where do seeds come from? Menu

Seed Dispersal The seeds grow in the fruit of the plant. The fruit of a plant grows during the spring and summer, like this apple tree shows.

Seed Dispersal Plants become dormant during the fall and winter months. There are a number of ways that the seeds can leave the plant.dormant Menu

Dormant When a plant is dormant it is during the fall and winter months. At this time the plant is not dead, just slowly growing.

Seed Dispersal WindWind can blow the seeds and spread them around. Menu

Seed Dispersal Seeds in a pod can also burstburst open and be spread around in this way. Menu

Seed Dispersal Plants can also shake seeds off the plant.shake Menu

Seed Dispersal WaterWater can carry the seeds to different areas. Menu

Seed Dispersal Seeds can be carried away ifcarried they get caught on something. Menu

Seed Dispersal AnimalsAnimals eat seeds and they can be dispersed in that way. Menu

Seed Dispersal Sometimes seeds can just fall and roll away.fall and roll Menu

Seed Dispersal There are many ways seeds can be dispersed, but no matter which way they leave the plant they will eventually begin growing in the ground. Menu End of section Click on menu

Seed Growth Now that we have learned how seeds are dispersed, it is time we discover how seeds grow into plants! Menu

Seed Growth First seeds are planted in the ground. Menu

Seed Growth Roots begin to grow helping the seeds get nutrients. A shoot (a small stem) starts to grow out of the seed and up towards the ground. Menu

Seed Growth When the shoot reaches the surface of the soil, it becomes a sprout. Menu

Seed Growth Water, air, sunlight and nutrients from the soil help the sprout grow and turn into a seedling.seedling Menu

Seedling A seedling is a small plant with very few leaves.

Seed Growth The seedling is now a young plant and plant growth is now noticeable. Menu

Seed Growth Do you know the order of seed growth? If you are unsure, review this part of the lesson again. Menu End of section Click on menu

Plant Parts It is important that we can identify the parts of plants so we know how the plant grows and what the parts do. Menu

Plant Parts Menu Seed Roots Stem Leaf Flower Shoot Fruit

Plant Parts Can you identify all parts of the plant? Menu End of section Click on menu

Plant Growth As a young plant grows into an adult it grows more leaves and becomes a healthier and larger plant. Menu

Plant Growth However, if plants do not receive proper care or have to live in unfit conditions they will not grow as well. Plant Growth Menu

Plant Growth Next, the plant will grow flowers or blooms which will then eventually grow fruit. Menu

Plant Growth The fruit grows during the spring and summer months, and when ripened can be harvested by humans or animals. Menu

Plant Growth As we have already mentioned before, the fruit contains the seeds and when the fruit has been produced the seeds can begin to be dispersed. Menu

Plant Growth Menu Once the seeds are dispersed, the plant begins to become dormant. This is the last stage in the life cycle. When spring comes, dormancy will end and the life cycle will begin again.

Plant Growth See a corn plant grow by watching this video! Menu

Plant Growth If you have questions about the plant life cycle, try going through parts of the lesson again or ask your teacher. If you know the material, you can move on to the review. Keep up the good work! Menu End of section Click on menu

Review Great work! You have now gone through the whole lesson and it is time to review for the quiz. Menu

Review Here is a video to show clearly how the plant cycle occurs. Menu End of section Click on menu

Quiz Are you ready for the Quiz? There will be 10 questions over the plant life cycle. If you do not feel ready, review the lesson again then come back. If you are ready click the arrow and good luck! Menu

Quiz Directions: Answer the questions to the best of your ability. If you need to stop and review the material again, simply click the menu button and try the quiz again when you feel better prepared. If you are ready now, click the forward arrow. Menu

Quiz 1)When a plant becomes dormant what happens next in the life cycle? A) The life cycle endsThe life cycle ends B) Nothing happensNothing happens C) The life cycle begins again in the SpringThe life cycle begins again in the Spring Menu

Quiz Good try but take another shot.

Quiz Something is always happening in the plant life cycle, try again.

Quiz Correct! A plant life cycle never stops, the plant just grows at a slower rate when dormant and begins growing faster when spring begins.

Quiz 2) What does a plant need in order to grow? A) WaterWater B) AirAir C) SunlightSunlight D) SoilSoil E) All of the aboveAll of the above Menu

Quiz Close, but try again.

Quiz Air is very important but something else is needed too.

Quiz Nice try but it is not the right answer.

Quiz Soil provides nutrients but it is not the correct answer.

Quiz Good work! All of these are needed to make a plant grow.

Quiz 3) Where do seeds come from? A) The groundThe ground B) The plants fruitThe plants fruit C) The storeThe store D) None of theseNone of these Menu

Quiz Sorry, seeds are planted in the ground but do not come from it.

Quiz Yes! The fruit grows the seeds and can be used to grow more plants.

Quiz You can buy seeds from the store but it is not where they originally came from.

Quiz Try again

Quiz 4) When the shoot begins to grow above the ground it is called what? A) SproutSprout B) SeedlingSeedling C) SeedSeed Menu

Quiz Correct! A sprout is when the plant first begins to grow because it is above ground.

Quiz A seedling is an older stage of the plant, but good try.

Quiz No, a seed is the first stage of a plant and is planted in the ground.

Quiz 5) What are all the parts of a plant? A) Leaves, Stem, Roots, Fruit. Leaves, Stem, Roots, Fruit. B) Leaves, Stem, Shoot, Roots, Flower, Fruit, Seeds. Leaves, Stem, Shoot, Roots, Flower, Fruit, Seeds. C) Roots, Leaves, Shoot, Flower, Fruit, Seed. Roots, Leaves, Shoot, Flower, Fruit, Seed. Menu

Quiz Your doing great! Keep it up, you are half way done! Menu

Quiz 6) True or False?True False A plant will grow the best with little light and plenty of water. Menu

Quiz Sorry try again. A plant needs plenty of light and water to grow.

Quiz Good work! A plant needs plenty of light and water to grow. These are not the only needs of a plant to grow however.

Quiz 7) Which picture shows the full order of seed growth? Menu A) D) C) B)

Quiz 8) What is one way seeds can be dispersed? A) AnimalsAnimals B) WindWind C) BurstingBursting D) All of the aboveAll of the above Menu

Quiz Try again.

Quiz Not quite, keep trying!

Quiz Sorry try again.

Quiz Correct! Seeds are dispersed in many ways and these are just a few ways that can happen.

Quiz 9) Which picture shows a Dormant plant? Menu

Quiz Correct! Trees stop crowing leaves in the winter when they become dormant.

Quiz Wrong answer. When trees are dormant their growing rate slows down.

Quiz 10) When does a plant grow flowers? A) As a seedAs a seed B) As a young plantAs a young plant C) As an adult plantAs an adult plant Menu

Quiz False, a seed grows roots.

Quiz Try again, a young plant is just becoming big enough to grow leaves.

Quiz Nice job! An adult plant is mature enough to grow flowers.

Quiz Congratulations! You finished the quiz! If there are any questions you missed review the lesson and try again and try for 100% accuracy! Menu

Plant Parts Seeds come from the fruit of the plant. They can be found on the inside or outside.

Plant Parts Roots grow from the seed and deep into the ground, helping the seed get nutrients to grow.

Plant Parts The stem is the body of the plant.

Plant Parts Leaves are attached to the stem, absorbs nutrients for the plant to grow.

Plant Parts Flowers are the part of the plant where the fruit begins to grow.

Plant Parts The shoot includes the stem of the plant, flower stems and flower buds.

Plant Parts Fruit is what the flowers produce. They can be vegetables, nuts or fruits.

Teachers Target Audience Third grade Indiana rural students. Class size around 25 students Ages ranging from 8-10 years old. Children with special needs can receive help from a teaching assistant.

Teachers Learning Environment: Students will be sitting at individual computers with head phones on in a computer lab. The teacher will be walking around helping any student who needs help.

Teachers Objectives: For students to be able to identify and explain the life cycle of a plant from the being stage as a seed through dormancy by taking a 10 question quiz and getting 100% accuracy. 3.5.5 Explain that one way to make sense of something is to think of how it relates to something more familiar. 3.6.4 Take, record and display counts and simple measurements of things over time, such as plant or student growth. 3.6.5 Observe that and describe how some changes are very slow and some are very fast and that some of these changes may be hard to see and/or record

Quiz This picture does not show the full order of seed growth, keep trying.

Quiz Good answer! It starts out as a seed, grows roots and a shoot, reaches the earths surface and is a sprout. It then becomes a seedling, and finally a young adult plant.

Quiz This picture is missing a few steps that were covered in this lesson, try reviewing Seed Growth and try the quiz again.

Quiz Sorry try again. This picture does not show the correct seed growth.

Quiz Sorry, you selected some of the plant parts but this list is not complete.

Quiz Way to go! This picture shows all the plant parts.

Quiz Try again, there are more plant parts than this.

Review The fruit of plants contain seeds. Plants need plenty of water and sun to grow, plus air and soil. In the spring, plants begin to grow leaves. In the summer, they are fully mature. In the fall, they change color. In the winter, they have lost all their leaves. Menu

Review Flowers only appear on mature plants. Seed growth: seed, seed with roots and shoot, sprout, then seedling. Seeds can be dispersed by animals, people, wind, water, falling, rolling, and shaking. Menu
