Conjugation of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th person singular in the PRESENT tense

2. Third person
We have seen this type of verb throughout the first 3 stages:
Servus in hortō laborat.
The slave works in the garden.
Caecilius pecuniam tenet.
Caecilius holds money.
Canis in viā dormit.
The dog sleeps in the street.
What do these verbs have in common?
Laborat, Tenet, Dormit

3. Third person, cont. This is the “he/she/it” form of the verb.
In these sentences, we are not talking about ME, or YOU, but SOMEBODY ELSE.
Metella est mater.
Metella is the mother.
Caecilius pecuniam numerat.
Caecilius counts money.
Amicus versum recitat.
The friend recites the verse.

4. First person
Now we will learn how to describe action from other POINTS OF VIEW.
When we talk about ourselves, we are using the FIRST PERSON.
Ego cenam coquo.
I cook dinner.
Ego pecuniam teneo.
I hold money.
Ego amicum laudo.
I praise the friend.

5. First person So what do these verbs have in common:
Coquo, teneo, laudo.
So we see that in Latin you can tell whether I do the action or HE does the action based on the verb’s ENDING:
Coquo = I cook
Coquit= he cooks
O = I
T = he

6. Second person What about if we want to say “you” do the action?
Tu cenam coquis.
You cook dinner.
Tu pecuniam tenēs.
You hold money.
Tu amicum laudās.
You praise the friend.
What do these verbs have in common?
Coquis, tenēs, laudās.

7. conjugation
Putting the correct ending on a verb to make it express “I”, “you” or “he” does the action is called conjugating it.
But what is different about laudat, tenet, and coquit?
The –a, -e, -i.
Verbs that have the –a vowel are FIRST conjugations.
All verbs whose second principal part ends in –are are 1st conjugation verbs.
Laudo, laudare, laudavi, laudatus
Laudo, laudas, laudat
Verbs that have the –e vowel are SECOND conjugations.
All verbs whose second principal part ends in –ēre are 2nd conjugation verbs
Teneo, tenēre, tenui, tentus
Teneo, tenes, tenet

8. Conjugation, cont. The next two conjugations are more tricky.
There are THIRD conjugation verbs:
Coquo, coquis, coquit
Scribo, scribis, scribit
And FOURTH conjugation verbs:
Dormio, dormīs, dormit
Audio, audīs, audit
Notice the difference:
Coquo/dormio
