1 Conjugating Verbs Present Tense 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd person

2 To form a verb in the present tense:  For 1 st, 2 nd, and 4 th conjugation (-āre, -ēre, -īre)  Step 1: Go to the second principle part (The infinitive) habeō, habēre habeō, habēre

3  Step 2: Take the second principle part, and drop off the –re ending. habēre habē habēre habē  Step 3: Write this new stem three times: habēhabē

4  Step 4: Add on the personal endings. Habēō…………..I have Habēō…………..I have Habēs…………..You (sing) have Habēs…………..You (sing) have Habēt…………...H/S/I has Habēt…………...H/S/I has

5  The only time this pattern changes is for 1 st conjugation, 1 st person.  laudō, laudāre laudō (you have to drop the “a” as well…it will laudō (you have to drop the “a” as well…it will laudāsbecome laudō) laudāsbecome laudō) Laudāt Laudāt  You can double check yourself by making sure your 1 st person singular matches the first principle part of the verb!

6 Tu Tempta!  Conjugate the following verbs in the 1 st, 2 nd, and 3 rd person present form:  gustō, gustāre  sedeō, sedēre  dormiō, dormīre

7  gustāre gusto gusto gustas gustas Gustat Gustat  sedēre sedeo sedeo sedes sedes Sedet Sedet  dormīre dormio dormio dormis dormis Dormit Dormit

8 For 3 rd conjugation verbs (-ere)  Step 1: Go to the second principle part. surgo, surgere  Step 2: Drop the –ere from the second principle part. surgere“surg”

9  Step 3: Write this new stem 3 times. surg surg

10  Step 4: Add the letter “i” to the second and third person. surg surg surgi surgi

11  Step 5: Add on the personal endings. surgo………….I rise surgo………….I rise surgis…………You rise surgis…………You rise surgit………….H/S/I rises surgit………….H/S/I rises
