4 National Aeronautics and Space Administration nai.nasa.gov NASA Astrobiology Institute 4 Web Statistics Capability Overview The NASA Astrobiology Institute has at its disposal a set of tools that allow website traffic to be analyzed. With these tools, the following questions can be answered: –Who are our visitors, and how many of them are there? –How do our visitors reach our site? –Which pages of the site do our visitors view?

5 National Aeronautics and Space Administration nai.nasa.gov NASA Astrobiology Institute 5 NAI website statistics General –In top 10 of Ames websites in terms of traffic –#6 Google search result for “Astrobiology” (#5 Yahoo, #4 MSN) 2006 web traffic (12 full months) –Average of 33,000 visits/month from 24,500 unique visitors (1100 visits/day) –Average of 126,000 web page views per month. –Average of 3.77 pages viewed per visit. May 2007 web traffic –46,067 visits from 29,322 unique visitors » 32% increase from May 2006 –195,158 web pages viewed –4.23 pages viewed per visit –75.0 % of visitors to the NAI website connected using a direct address or bookmark (includes internal navigation, RSS); –21.0 % connected to the site from a search engine; –3.8 % connected to the site from another website.

11 National Aeronautics and Space Administration nai.nasa.gov NASA Astrobiology Institute11 NAI Website: Content Management

12 National Aeronautics and Space Administration nai.nasa.gov NASA Astrobiology Institute 12 Content Management System (CMS) NAI Central has developed a Content Management System (CMS) for efficiently managing website content Key Features –Allows website content to be added, updated and maintained using a secure web interface. –Allows content owners to manage their own content which reduces bottlenecks and allows the web developer(s) to focus on other projects. –Because website content is stored in a database, the look, feel, and organization of the website can be changed without having to reprogram content.

16 National Aeronautics and Space Administration nai.nasa.gov NASA Astrobiology Institute 16 Web Statistics Capability Overview Who are our Visitors? –Using web log analysis, visitors can be categorized as USA public (.com,.net domains), USA government (.gov) USA educational (.edu) USA non-profit (.org) and international. Knowing the proportion of visitors from these categories provides data useful in determining if the target audience of the website is being reached. –The list of visitors can be filtered to determine the number of visitors from a particular host or institution. The NAI has found this useful in determining the webpage usage of its members. The operating system, browser, and screen resolution of visitors is also collected.

17 National Aeronautics and Space Administration nai.nasa.gov NASA Astrobiology Institute 17 Web Statistics Capability Overview How do visitors reach our site? Using web log analysis, it can be determined how visitors reach the website. Specifically, it can be determined whether visitors reached the site by –using an Internet search engine; –clicking on a link from an external website; or –typing in the website address directly or using a bookmark. Which pages of the site do our visitors view? –Detailed statistics on the webpages viewed by visitors are available. This allows the website owner to determine which sections of the website are relevant to visitors.
