9 Effects of Smoke-free Laws Smoke-free laws do NOT hurt business. They —  Protect everyone from secondhand smoke.  Prompt many smokers to quit.  Increase the number of successful quit attempts.  Reduce the number of cigarettes smoked.  Discourage kids from starting to smoke.
