2 Reading Maps  Content Area: Social Studies  Grade Level: 1 st grade  The purpose of this instructional PowerPoint is to show the students how to recognize basic map symbols to be able to read a map.  Given images of maps and instructional links, students will be able to identify shapes of Tennessee in the United States and the Americas on maps and globes with 90% accuracy.  TN Social Studies State Standard 1.17 Identify the shapes of Tennessee and the United States on maps and globes.  ISTE Standard: 3. Research and information fluency Students apply digital tools to gather, evaluate, and use information. a. Plan strategies to guide inquiry b. Locate, organize, analyze, evaluate, synthesize, and ethically use information from a variety of sources and media c. Evaluate and select information sources and digital tools based on the appropriateness to specific tasks d. Process data and report results

3 Map Outlines  Look at the first picture, it shows the shape of the United States.  Now look at the second picture, it shows the shape of Tennessee.  Can you find that shape in the outline of the United States?

12 Conclusion  We learned how to identify shapes of Tennessee and the United States.  We also learned the shapes of The Americas.  We know where North America, and South America are.  The United States is in North America.  Tennessee is in The United States.  We live in Tennessee!!
