6 Student stuck on a word *Stay relaxed. Ask the child to think about what would make sense in the sentence. What would sound right and/or look right. Alternatives to “sound it out” *Wait 3-5 seconds *Point to the picture *Tap the start of the sentence and say “try that again.” Sometimes going back and rereading helps the child keep the meaning in their head. *Say the first part of the word and think what would make sense. Picking the right book *Star system *Easier books are better than harder

7 Paired Reading *Sit side by side with your student and begin reading aloud together *Move your finger along under the words as you both read. *If the student gains confidence, turn your voice off and let him read as long as he is comfortable. Comprehension *See comprehension questions in the folder *Take your time. Relax and enjoy the engagement. Do’s and Don’ts Make the experience a pleasant one. Be positive. Make sure the book is well matched to the student’s ability. Do not let a student struggle with a book that is too difficult. Praise good performance, but not over the top.

8 Math Tutoring Suggestions Give the student time to process the question and strategies of getting to an answer. DO NOT GIVE THE STUDENT THE ANSWER. Ask them how their teacher explained it. Make sure you are using “Investigations thinking” to solve the problem. Do not use traditional algorithm methods unless that is the homework. Utilize the Investigations books in the room if having difficulty or ask staff for assistance. Writing Blank journals in folders and writing prompts in baskets.
