2 WHAT’S THE CLIMATE OF SPAIN? The Cantabrian Mountains separate two main regions with distinctly different climates Green Spain, north of the Cantabrian mountains, has mild winters and cool summers Dry Spain, south of the Cantabrian mountains, has bitter winters and dry summers Spain has a very dry climate Plenty of rain in northern Spain Hot summers and cold winters in Messeta Central

3 Were On Earth Is Spain Located? Spain is in Europe. Spain borders Portugal, and France. Spain borders the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea

4 What foods do people eat in Spain? A wide variety of foods Lunch is the main meal of the day People enjoy cool foods during the warmer temperatures On hot days they drink Sangria which is a mixture of ice, fruit, red wine and water Tapas – plates of cheese, sausage, olives, artichokes and snails in garlic Children enjoy Churros – sugared strips of fried dough Paella – a rice dish made with tomatoes, peppers, beans, seafood or chicken

5 What is Spain’s money? Euro – also used in all of Europe There are 100 cents in a euro

6 What Holidays does Spain Celebrate? Fallas de Valencia ( The Festival of Fire) – Kids get to play with fireworks the entire week and on the last day, huge puppets are stuffed with fireworks and set on fire Semana Santa ( Holy Week) – begins Palm Sunday and lasts till Easter Sunday, processions of large floats carrying life-sized figures of saints

7 Celebrations, Continued Running of the Bulls is one of the most famous traditions in Spain Feast of the Three Kings-the Three Kings come on Jan.5 and give kids presents the night before Jan.6. Tomatina ( Tomato fight) – participants throw thousands of tomatoes at each other until they are drenched in tomato juice

8 What Is Spanish music? Flamenco - danced by gypsies. Graceful hand movements, complex footwork, and guitarists accompany it. Often hand clapping and castanets Fandango Bolero La Mamba

9 What are the Natural Resources, imports, exports, goods and services? Grow the most lemons, oranges and strawberries in Europe Wheat Olives, grapes Coal, copper, mercury, uranium, lead, iron, zinc and cork Tourism is the most important industry – top 3 most visited countries in the world!!

10 What are the National Monuments? The Sagrada Familia church is unfinished. Salvador Dali museum.

11 What Are Spain’s Sports And Games? Soccer teams are Real Madrid, FC Barcelona, and The Spanish National Team. Severiano Balleseros is part of golf history. Arantxa Sanchez Vicario won Frencho Penin in 1989 (tennis). Meguel Induran won the Tour de France.

15 Life as a Kid in Spain Kids go to school, play with friends, do homework, watch TV and spend time with their families Some go home for lunch Kids in Spain get 2 hours for lunch After school kids walk with relatives Kids don’t eat dinner until very late Kids’ bedtime is around 10:00 pm
