W HAT … Green Building is the use of environmentally friendly products and building materials to reduce energy waste and reduce the impact of buildings on the environment Environmentally friendly products Double pane windows Washers that use less water Dryers that require less heat Fridges that don’t use Freon Low-wattage light bulbs Low flow toilets

E NVIRONMENTALLY F RIENDLY P RODUCTS Low wattage florescent light bulbs last up to 5 years as opposed to incandescent light bulbs which last about 1000hrs Low flush toilets use about a 1/3 of the water that conventional toilets use which saves money on the water bill.

W HY N OT … Some people believe that green buildings require giving up being comfortable Can’t have a good heating system and air conditioning must be limited Ride a bike to work Cost of building green is expensive Materials can be highly priced A heating system for Langdon Woods a college dorm housing facility for about 380 students costs $1 million to install.

W HY … Green Building is good for the environment The temperature in a city can be 6-8 degrees higher than surrounding areas. Green buildings with better roofing can help reduce this temperature. It requires less energy Indoor Air Quality in green buildings is better Cost of living is less after building expenses This Energy Star Savings Calculator shows how you can save by buying more energy efficient appliances such as washing machines.Energy Star Savings Calculator

G REEN B UILDING I N E XISTENCE Langdon Woods Hall- Plymouth State University One of the first college dorms to receive LEED certification.LEED certification Low flush toilet system saves 1.4 million gallons of water per year. Rhapsody Cove at Rock Creek - Chicago Developers set aside 60% of the 243 acre development as green space. Homes are built using energy efficient and economically sensible materials.

L ANGDON W OODS D ORM The dorm is expected to use 58% less energy than a conventional dorm. This saves $230,000 in energy costs a year Rhapsody Cove at Rock Creek.

A G REENER F UTURE The cost of building green is getting cheaper. Russell Albenese a green architect in New York estimates that in the time he has been building says that the costs of finding and building with green products has decreased from a 17 to 20% premium down to a 5% premium in the last eight years. The amount of green building has increased Between 2005 and 2006 new green homes jumped by 30% Green homes could include 5% of the entire US housing market within 5 years.
