2 What is the Preamble? It is the introduction to the Constitution. Preamble (Latin) means to “walk in front.” It gives the 6 reasons the Framers wanted to write a brand new Constitution!

3 So what does it mean? In order to form a more perfect union Establish justice Insure domestic tranquility Provide for the common defense In order to make a better country Create a country based on fair laws Make sure the country is peaceful Make sure the country is safe from enemies

4 So what does it mean? Promote the general welfare Secure the blessings of liberty To ourselves and our posterity Do ordain and establish Make sure the govt. is good for the people Keep our people free For ourselves and our future generations Say this with the full authority of the law

6 The Preamble Why? More perfect union (make a better government) Why? Justice (make a fair country with laws) Why? General welfare (make a country where the govt. is good to its people ) Why? Common defense (make a country where people are safe from enemies ) Why? Domestic tranquility (make a peaceful country) Why? Blessings of liberty (make a country where people are free) Who? We the people of the United States What? Establish Constitution for the United States of America (make this plan of government)

12 Poster 10 points total To earn full points poster must: Have term written largely Have definition of term in student-friendly language At least 3 pictures that relate to the principle Color -3 no definition -1 spelling -1 for each missing picture -1 for each picture that doesn’t match the principle -1 for not filling the entire poster

13 Critical Thinking Paragraph 5 points total To earn full points it must be: 3 or more sentences Must answer the question Must give explanation/examples of how things might have been different if minority groups had attended the Constitutional Convention -2 if less than 3 sentences -3 if explanation is weak or doesn’t make complete sense -4 if it doesn’t answer the question

14 Short Answer-Quiz 4 points total To earn full points it must include: Explanation of 2 principles and how they relate Examples of how they relate -2 if no explanation listed -1 if only one example listed -2 if no examples are listed

15 Grading Criteria (10 pts.) Group Dynamic: Students cooperate and participate in the planning and performance of the group Knowledge: Students can recite the Preamble Actions: Students know the actions; each action helps depict the meaning of the Preamble Performance: Students take the performance seriously and perform in unison; the performance is entertaining Creativity: The performance is creative/unique
