3 What is Colon Cancer? What is Colon Cancer? n A disease in which cancer cells are found in the tissue of the colon. n The Colon is the last 6 feet of your intestine. n Other names for the disease are intestinal cancer, cancer of the intestine, colorectal cancer.

4 What is the Cause of the Problem? What is the Cause of the Problem? n There is no single cause of colon cancer. n Other causes are heredity, abnormal genes, if you have a high risk of cancer.

5 Symptoms Symptoms n Diarrhea n Blood in stool n Unexplained Anemia n Abdominal pain and tenderness n Intestinal Obstruction n Weight loss

6 Number of Cases Number of Cases n This year, about 131,600 people in the United States will be diagnosed with colorectal cancer. n Today, the average man or woman has about a 1 in 20 chance of developing colorectal cancer during his or her life.

7 Stages of Disease Stages of Disease n Dukes A: mucosal involvement only n Dukes B: local invasion of the tumor n Dukes C: involvement of regional lymph nodes n Dukes D: distant metastases of tumor

8 Prognosis Prognosis n Dukes A and B have high cure rates following resection. Dukes C provides a 60% 5-year survival when resection is followed by chemotherapy. The overall 5 year survival rate is 50% after resection. n There is no definitive prevention but screening tests may lead to early detection and improved survival.

9 Cures and Treatments Cures and Treatments n Treatment-Surgical resection of the affected part of the colon is the primary treatment alternative. n Chemotherapy or radiation therapy may be added when tumor has invaded the lymph system. n Doctors estimate that 40 percent of all colon cancer cases could be prevented by following a good diet, avoiding obesity, and engaging in regular physical activity.

10 Personal Story Personal Story Eric Davis An 11-year veteran of the major leagues, Eric “The Red” achieved almost every conceivable award in baseball including a World Series Championship. Recently he was diagnosed with colon cancer.

11 Summary Summary n Almost no one is at low risk, so all people should be aware of the symptoms of colorectal cancer as well as the screening programs that can detect disease in individuals who have no symptoms. colon cancer is a serious condition, but a majority of patients can be cured, and surgery is rarely needed.
