1 Metals and Alloys

2 In the beginning!! Tool where made out of stone (C) Then Cu and Sn
Then bronze But bronze is not an element!

3 Alloys A mixture made of 2 or more elements that has the properties of a metal At least 1 element is a metal Cu + Sn = Bronze

4 Properties of Metals Hard Shinny Conductive Ductile Malleable

5 Properties of Alloys Au is soft and malleable
Au rings are hard? Alloys are used more then pure metals Stronger Less reactive to air and water

6 Properties of Alloys Fe is used in steel
Stainless Steel = Fe + C + Ni + Cr Does not rust Hard

7 Making Alloys Melt elements and mix in together in carefully measured amount It’s a recipe Mix element powders and heat them under pressure Uses less energy to create

8 Steel Strong, hard, resistant to corrosion
Not all steels are alike but they all have iron Carbon steel Wrought iron

9 High Carbon Steel 0.6 – 1.5 percent carbon Tools, knives, springs

10 Low Carbon Steel Less than 0.2 percent carbon Ductile and malleable
Nails, cables, chains

11 Other Alloys Bronze Brass Sterling silver Solder Amalgam
