A new approach in support to food security and sustainable agriculture Jean-Marc Faurès, NRL TCI Days 2014 The Water-Energy-Food Nexus @ FAO
2
Why FaO embarked on a nexus approach ? Increasing pressure on resources for socio-economic development: – Growing and competing demand for energy, food, water – Increasingly complex interactions between water, food and energy – Stressed natural resources – Climate change Policies and development strategies very much sector-driven – Incoherence – Conflicts – Missed opportunities for enhanced synergies – Sub-optimal investments Limitations of integrated approaches cross-sectoral dialogue becomes key

Across sectors: Transparent and effective allocation mechanisms Management of trade-offs Enhancement of synergies Example: Scenario-thinking for managing the nexus in the Syr Darya Basin Implications for investments Within sectors: Resources use efficiency productivity Reduction of wastes and losses Example: modernization of irrigation schemes through the FAO-MASSCOTE approach
