Nautilus IT (NITC) Wireless Network for RDC Construction

IEEE 802.11 1997 Advantages- convenience, at the time fast speeds of 1 and 2 Mbps. Disadvantages- Lack of mobility, limited range, confined to indoor use only, and slow transmission speed.

IEEE 802.11b Advantages- Speeds of 5.5 Mbps and 11 Mbps, supports wireless devices up to 350 feet (107 meters) apart. Disadvantages- Data transmitted over radio waves and the further distance devices were apart the slower transmission speeds. Also more obstructions that were in the way of devices resulted in slower transmission speeds.

IEEE 802.11a Advantages- Maximum speed of 54 Mbps, uses a different set of radio waves that 802.11b. Disadvantages- Cost to produce due to the semiconductor, shorter distances that 802.11b.

IEEE 802.11g Advantages- Maximum speed of 54 Mbps, support devices up to 350 feet (107 meters apart), use in G-only mode, B-only mode, or you can use mixed mode. Disadvantages- Maximum speed of 54 Mbps became inadequate.

IEEE 802.11g G-Only Mode Only 802.11g devices are recognized and 802.11b devices are ignored.

IEEE 802.11g B-Only Mode Only 802.11b devices are recognized and 802.11g devices are ignored.

IEEE 802.11g Mixed Mode Although both 802.11b and 802.11g devices can function together on the same wireless network, the presence of any 802.11b device will cause the network to decrease its data rate to only 802.11b speeds.

IEEE 802.11n-2009 Advantages- Speed up to 600 Mbps, Coverage area doubled the indoor range and tripled the outdoor range, uses different frequencies to reduce interference, and requires the strongest level of wireless security. Disadvantages- The process of ratifying 802.11n took longer than expected, and the delay required vendors to introduce products that were not strictly based on IEEE standards.

Suggestion for Connecting Buidlings Our suggestion is a cost effective point-to-point bridge to connect the two buildings. This will allow you to have a separate wireless router inside the remote building (showroom or warehouse) which will allow for local access to the laptops and desktops in that building. At the main location, you will connect the radio to the LAN port on your N router. On the remote building you will connect the radio to the WAN port on your remote router. The radios should be mounted outside, and pointed at each other…they are housed in a weather proof enclosure.

Cost of Point-to-Point Wireless Bridge D Link D-Link Xtreme N Duo Wireless Bridge/Access Point Mfr P/N DAP-1522 $168.34 each D-Link - Wireless AC1000 Dual-Band Cloud Router $119.99 each
