2 Tertiary Economic Activities Tertiary economic activity involves providing services for people. In wealthy countries there are lots of people employed in service industries. In poor countries fewer people are employed in service industries. Most people are engaged in primary economic activity. Q. Why do you think this difference exists? Q. 10 Tourism in Ireland Tourism is an important part of the Irish economy. In 2002, 6 million tourists visited Ireland, adding €4 billion to the economy. There are 141,000 people employed in the tourism sector. Q. Where did most of these tourists come from? Q. Why do many American tourists visit Ireland?

11 Tourism in Ireland Ireland is easily accessible as a tourist destination. Tourists can fly into Ireland. Ferries also come from Scotland, England and France. This is popular for people who want to bring their own cars.

12 Why do Tourists visit Ireland? Natural Beauty – The Giant’s Causeway, Killarney National Park, Glendalough, Connemara. Beaches & Coastlines – The Cliffs of Moher, Dingle Peninsula, beaches around the coastline. Recreation & Sports – Fishing lakes, boating on the River Shannon, Golfing, International rugby and soccer matches at Croke Park. Cities – Many people visit cities like Dublin for short weekend breaks. They visit the museums, theatres, art galleries, and other historic buildings.

13 Tourism in Co. Clare Co. Clare is a popular destination for many people who visit Ireland. Tourism brings lots of money to the economy of the county. Many people are employed in the tourist industry. Q. Why do people visit Co.Clare? 1.It is a centre of traditional Irish music. 2.Bunratty Castle and Folk Park show medieval life in Ireland. 3.The Cliffs of Moher, The Burren, surfing at Lahinch.

Why is the South of France so popular? –It has a Mediterranean climate, with warm dry summers. –It has a rich culture with many examples of Roman civilization. –It is easily accessible by road, rail, and air travel. –There are lots of tourist resorts in Monte Carlo, Cannes, and Nice.
