PRESENTED BY: CIELO GRACE Y. MORANTA MAED-ENGLISH 1 LOURDES COLLEGE MAY 2015 PRESENTED TO: MERCELITA J. LABIAL, PH.D. PROFESSOR ED ENG 106- TECHNOLOGY IN LANGUAGE TEACHING Integrated Activity

What is Integrated Activity ? In the context of technology:  integrating technology into the curriculum is a priority, if not a mandate in most schools today  most educational technology experts agree, however, that technology should be integrated, not as a separate subject or as a once-in-a-while project, but as a tool to promote and extend student learning on a daily basis  the challenge, of course, is in finding ways to use technology -- and to help students use it -- that don't take time away from core subjects.

Consider the following Integrated Activities : Access an online weather forecast ( The Weather Channel, UM Weather, USA Today Weather) Include URLs in your monthly calendar ( Yahoo kids, Months of the Year Projects ) Access online weather forecasts in French, German, or Spanish ( learning in other languages) Challenge students with online mathematics problems.

some more Integrated Activities… Provide a URL in place of a quote ( quote of the day, quote of the week, etc.) Introduce a word of the day ( for opening activity, e.g., Word Central) Keep them spelling ( Spellingcity.com) Make history real ( quick visit to Today in History, This Day in History ) Utilize online work sheets (creative writing activity through Teachnology, Writing Bug, Scavenger Hunt, etc.) Offer online SAT practice ( Vocabulary Builder )Vocabulary Builder

more examples of integrated activities…. Beef up your history lessons ( visit the Library of Congress's American Memory Collections search engine )American Memory Collections search engine Provide online reading comprehension practice ( Fluency Through Fables )Fluency Through Fables Incorporate online news sources into discussions of current events (Online Newspapers, CNN, MSNBC,etc.)Online Newspapers CNNMSNBC

integrated activities… make the news a learning tool ( The Why Files, etc.) The Why Files Spice up your grammar lessons (Explore Daily Grammar's Lesson Archive to find a new grammar lesson every day)Lesson Archive Make science a daily event (Astronomy Picture of the Day, Earth Science Picture of the Day, Today in Science History )Astronomy Picture of the DayEarth Science Picture of the DayToday in Science History

more… Make geography a daily event (GeoBee Challenge, How Far Is It?, etc.)GeoBee ChallengeHow Far Is It? Keep them guessing! (let them solve problems at Mystery Net,etc.)Mystery Net

Why is Technology Integration Needed? Education leaders have recognized the importance of students learning how to use technology and have enacted new technology standards that require teachers to integrate the use of technology into the curriculum for every subject. They have seen the great need for students to learn to use technology as a part of their daily lives in order to prepare themselves for a future filled with technology

Rationale for using Technology in Education : 1. Technology provides motivation for students by: -Gaining learner attention -Engaging the learner through production work -Increasing perceptions of control 2. Technology offers unique instructional capabilities, such as : -Linking learners to information and educational resources -Helping learners visualize problems and solutions -Tracking learner progress -Linking learners to learning tools

more rationale…. 3. Technology gives support for new instructional approaches, such as: -Cooperative learning -Shared intelligence -Problem solving and higher level skills 4. Technology skills are required for an information age: -Technology literacy -Information literacy -Visual literacy

continuation… 5. Technology increased teacher productivity by: -freeing time to work with students by helping with production and record-keeping tasks -providing more accurate information more quickly -allowing teachers to produce better looking, more “student-friendly” materials more quickly
