2 1) Immigration to Australia in a new context Australia: nation-building by Bristish colonialism After Second World War: immigration (mostly European) to increase population and strengthen economy Emigration from Asia: 1970ies onwards Very dynamic Asian immigration -> impact on cultural diversity of Australia

4 Two migration groups: economic stream (1) and family reunion/ humanitarian stream (2) 68% belong to economic stream Migration policies have become strict

5 3) How does integration work? Some Australians feel their culture is under threat -> desire for cultural homogeinety Ethnic communities are forming Possible discussion: “Although Asia is geographically closer, it seems ‘easier‘ for the Australian society to cope with immigration from Europe (which is part of the Australian heritage), while ‘more foreign‘ Asian influences are more difficult to integrate.“
