3 Adjective Answers the following questions: 1. What kind? green backpack 2. Which one or ones? last hamburger 3. How many or how much? two flashlights

4 Example Noisy coyotes startled the campers. Noisy is an adjective that describes what kind of coyotes.

5 Article An, a and the are the most common adjectives used with singular nouns. Use an when the word begins with a vowel (a, e, i, o, or u)- an axe, an elephant Use a when the word begins with a consonant- a bird, a plane

6 Proper Adjective Are formed from a proper noun and are always capitalized. Proper NounProper Adjective IrelandIrish SpainSpanish Canada Canadian We love Chinese food.

7 Predicate Adjectives An adjective that follows a linking verb and describes a verb’s subject. The linking verb connects the predicate adjective to the subject

8 Predicate Adjectives Example: The milk tasted sour. Milk- subject. Tasted- linking verb. Sour- predicate adjective. The gum is sticky. Gum- subject. Is- linking verb. Sticky- predicate adjective

9 Adverb Answer Questions: 1. How? Suddenly, carefully, sadly 2. When? now, later, soon 3. Where? there, up, ahead 4. To what extent? completely, totally, fully

10 Adverb- next 3 slides not on sheet Modifies or describes a verb: Example: Joe moved slowly across the field. Verb- moved. Slowly- adverb

11 Adverb Modifies or describes an adjective: Example: Sue was very happy. Verb- was Predicate adjective- happy Adverb- very

12 Adverb Modifies or describes an adverb: Example: Tina ran to the cafeteria quite eagerly. Verb- ran Adverb-quite and eagerly.

13 Making Comparisons Comparative Form- used when comparing two people or things Rule 1: Add -er for most 1 syllable words Example: A sea is smaller than an ocean. (Compares sea and ocean) Other examples: smoother, younger

14 Making Comparisons Rule 2: For two or more syllable words, add the word more Example: The water flows more rapidly near its source than its mouth. (Compares the source and mouth) Other examples: more dangerous, more careful

15 Making Comparisons Superlative Form- used when comparing someone or something to more than one other person or thing. Rule 1: Add -est for most 1 syllable words Example: Barbara is the youngest girl in her family. (Compares Barbara and all the other girls in her family)

16 Making Comparisons Rule 2: Add most for two or more syllable words Example: That is the most dangerous spot on the cliff. (Compares it to all the other spots on the cliff) Other examples: most beautiful, most powerful
