1 Mexico Human Geography

2 Early Peoples Mexico has been dominated by a large number of Native American civilizations, including the Toltecs, Mayans and Aztecs The arrival of the Spanish in the 1500’s vastly changed the dynamics of life in Mexico

3 Cortes The arrival of the Cortes saw the conquering of the Aztec people This began the dominance of Spanish rule over the lands of Mexico Cortes captures the Aztec city of Tenochtitlan, the current day location of Mexico City

4 Mexican Independence Mexico remained a Spanish colony until 1821, when it achieved its independence under the leadership of Agustin de Iturbide Mexico also fights a Civil War over corruption and poverty, which was led by Pancho Villa and Emiliano Zapata. A new constitution to run Mexico was drafted in 1917

5 Aztecs A large civilization in Central Mexico who arrived around 1200 AD Human sacrifices became a religious tradition practiced by the Aztecs

6 Spanish arrival The arrival of the Spanish brought the dominance of the Spanish language and the Catholic religion, both of which are still dominant today Mexico has a large mestizo population, or a mixture of Spanish and Native American populations

7 Urbanization Like many other countries, the population has continually moved into the cities to find work This is most evidently seen with areas such as Mexico City and the increase in population of towns on the border with Texas

9 Resources Based heavily on oil reserves near the Gulf Coast
Maquiladoras- Companies in Northern Mexico where goods are assembled, such as clothing, furniture and electronic equipment, and then shipped to the United States

10 NAFTA North American Free Trade Agreement
Created a large zone of trade between Mexico, The United States and Canada Done to reduce and eventually remove all tariffs between these countries

11 Emigration Because of the proximity to the United States, migration has become a big issue between the governments of both the US and Mexico The wealth of the United States has further added to this dilemma.
