●The history of the Incas began about 9,000 years ago. ●the Inca empire arose around the fifteenth century AD. o Their empire was in a place now known as Cuzco which is located in the Andes Mountains. In the southern end of Peru. o they were at an altitude of about 11,000 feet. o The Inca Empire didn’t last very long. It lasted just about 100 years, from 1438 AD, when Pachacuti and his army began conquering many lands. And it ended when the Spaniards began arriving around the 1530s. ●The capital, Cuzco, was built by the Inca emperor Pachacuti. o he supposedly ordered for it to be destroyed and then rebuilt in the shape of a puma which was shown in profile. Language- Meredith The official language of the Inca Empire was Quechua. In their own language, they were often referred to as Tawantinsuyu.

Dress/ Clothing- Meredith Clothing varied based off of class. Most of the people wore gowns with no sleeves and a belt around the waist. Upper class wore almost the same gown, but with much finer wool and often in bright colors.

Food- Meredith The Inca diet was mainly vegetarian based and involved them eating vegetables such as potatoes as their staple diet. Although potatoes were the main source of food for the Incas, other food such as quinoa, beans, squash, sweet potatoes, avocados, tomatoes and manioc were also important to their diet. Vegetables were very important because they are know to help the body regulate and withstand low temperatures.

Sports - Jenny ●The inca played a game called Tlachtli. ●They used a hard rubber, about 6 inches in diameter. ●They wore padding. ●Could only touch the ball with their hips, knees, legs, or elbows. ●It was a mixture of basketball, kickball, and soccer. ●The losing team was sacrificed to the gods. ●Winners could take the money, clothes, wives children, or even homes of the losers.

Religion: ●The Inca were polytheistic; their main gods and goddesses were: Inti- the Sun God Viracocha- the Creator Illapa- the Weather God Pachamama- the Earth Goddesses Manaquila- Moon Goddess ●Sacrificial rites were also performed. Animals; like llamas and guinea pigs, made up a majority of the sacrifices. In some cases, though, women or a kid would be sacrificed to the Gods. ○Women and children were given beer first and the priest sang songs before they strangled them ●They had sacred objects called Huacas ○Mummies of dead rulers were considered special huacas ○Families had sacred amulets in their homes as huacas, they somees sacrificed the huacas to keep balance between nature and society.

Religion Continued ●Ancestor worship played a big role in Inca religion. o They sometimes mummified their ancestors with llama hide to keep in their homes o They buried their ancestors with their most prized possessions, they also placed food with the buried people ●The most important festival in their religion, which was the festival of the Sun was held in June. This festival was so important that even the emperor of the Incan empire attended and actually hosted the festival. o It usually lasted up to nine days. o The Incas had a feast called Inti-Raymi that was held at the shortest day of the year o llamas were sacrificed to the sun god.

Government: Loyanna The Inca government system was set up into 4 different quarters headed up by 4 Apos. These Apos were just below the King. Every quarter was made up of provinces run by officials. The system was hierarchal and set up by a bureaucracy.

Technology: Jennifer ●Quipus: Was a series of strings with knots to record information ●Stone buildings: the incas created large stones with the use of mortar ●Aqueducts: Brought freshwater into the town ●Calendar: They studied the sun and the stars to calculate their calendar ●Roads: The incas built roads that went throughout the empire. They also built bridges
