2 imperialism The direct takeover of a weaker nation or territory by a stronger nation The united states practiced imperialism with Cuba, Hawaii, Philippines, Puerto rico, and the creation of the panama canal. European countries conquered nations in Africa without resistance (Germany competed against France and Germany)

3 Alliance system After the assassination of archduke Franz Ferdinand of Austria- Hungary by a Serbian extremist, Russia, Germany, and other world powers went to war to support their allies. The united states joined the side of the allied powers (triple Entente) versus The Central Powers (Triple Alliance) when they decided to go against their isolationism philosophy

4 nationalism The deep devotion or pride to ones country, heightened during wartime Led by propaganda Strong supporter of the rights and interests in your country

5 militarism An “arms race” to see who could build up their military the quickest…navy and ground Non-allies saw militarism as a threat to their safety The military receives support from the countries government Growth of Nationalism/imperialism rises Military Budgets Germany and Britain race to build best sea Fleet – France, Italy, Japan, and U.S. soon follow

6 World war one begins Chaos!!!
Austria-Hungary declares war on Serbia after the assassination of Austrian archduke Franz Ferdinand in Sarajevo Russia got involved to defend Serbia Germany, seeing Russia mobilize, declares war on Russia France then declares war against Germany and Austria-Hungary Germany attacks France through Belgium, drawing great Britain into war with Germany The united states had an isolationism approach at the beginning of the war Chaos!!!

7 Who has an advantage??? The triple entente, later became the “allies” consisted of France, Great Britain, and Russia The triple alliance consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy (Italy would join the allies later on in the war. Later called the “central powers” Allies: Australia, Belgium, British colonies, Canada, France, French African colonies, great Britain, Greece, India, Italy, japan, Montenegro, new Zealand, Portugal, Romania, Russia, Serbia, south Africa, u.S.A (all of these countries joined on the side of the allies at various times throughout the war) Central powers: Austria-Hungary, Bulgaria, Germany, ottoman empire

8 Trench warfare Trench warfare was the ultimate stalemate
Each side had dug at least 12,000 miles of trenches The allies used 4 types of trenches- front line, support, reserve, communication The Germans had a much higher quality of life in the trenches than the allies
